SERVPRO Helps Control Mold Growth in Pompano Beach Residences

Mold damage happens naturally in virtually all homes. Mold spores travel airborne and grow quietly, especially in high-humidity environments. Expectations of total mold eradication are unrealistic, but there are certainly some steps homeowners can take to keep it under control. However, even the most cautious people may encounter mold damage in basements, attics, and behind cabinets. Resorting to a reputable company is your best option to protect your home.

In Pompano Beach, look to SERVPRO for mold damage control. Suppose you wonder why it is critical to hire a team like ours once you call our 24/7 hotline. In that case, you won’t wonder anymore—our professionalism and deep understanding of the mold remediation process come from when we answer the phone. When the crew arrives with industry-grade cleaning solutions and equipment, you’ll confirm that you made the right decision.

Like many other things, being attentive to changes in your home can help you attack excessive mold growth early on and prevent a bigger problem. The following events should prompt you to be extra attentive to a change in your home that could develop into a widespread mold issue-

  • A plumbing or structural leak allows water to collect and stand for extended periods.
  • A change in the smell of your home, especially in darker spaces like closets and cabinets. Sometimes even a musty smell on your clothes can point to a mold problem.
  • Changes in your walls and ceilings, such as discoloration or brown spots.

SERVPRO of Pompano Beach is quick and effective in mold remediation and restoration. Reach us by calling (954) 970-4942 and let us work diligently until your home feels “Like it never even happened.”

SERVPRO Can Provide You with Quality Water Damage Repair in Your Pompano Beach Business

When water finds its way into your commercial or industrial enterprise, its effects can be devastating. It disrupts the normal traffic flow in the enterprise, affecting the delivery of products or services to your customers and employees. Water damage could also leave a considerable dent in your revenues, reducing the profits you were to gain from your business activities.

No business owner is supposed to be horrified after a water intrusion incident since SERVPRO is present to conduct commercial water damage repairs in Pompano Beach. Our process mostly begins with an assessment of the situation, which enables you to get a clear picture of how severe the water damage is on your property. This process can help you make the right decisions when restoration kicks in.

Regardless of whether the water damage is minor or significant, the assessment gives our SERVPRO team enough material to create a repair and restoration plan to see your business up and running in no time. Efficient drying can help recover some materials and ensure all materials are brought down to the proper moisture levels, to avoid further growth of mold.

To attain this, SERVPRO uses a combination of air movers and dehumidifiers strategically placed for maximum effect. The air movers accelerate the evaporation rate while dehumidifiers help us suck off water vapor in the atmosphere to create a dry and habitable internal environment. Some of the dehumidifiers that we use include:

  • Refrigerant dehumidifiers
  • Low grain refrigerants
  • Conventional refrigerants, and
  • Desiccants

In the course of our repairs and restoration, SERVPRO documents every detail of the damage and process to make your interaction with your insurance provider in seeking claims smoother. We can also preserve the retail goods, furnishings, and electronics required to keep your business operating.

Fire Restoration Safely Rebuilds Your Pompano Beach Home

12/26/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Pompano signage SERVPRO provides fast and immediate service for fire damage restoration. We are ready at a moment's notice.

Our Experts Are Skilled in Fire Restoration Safety

During a fire, the wood frame of your Pompano Beach residence experiences extreme temperatures. Such high temperatures can drive out moisture and make wood brittle and fragile. Fire restoration can make weakened structures like your home’s framework strong again.

Our building crew understands that until we finish certain stages of fire restoration, your Pompano Beach home continues to contain potentially dangerous areas. We adhere to the fire inspection and its guidelines when repairing your home.

The most common areas that experience a significant loss of safety because of a house fire are:

  • Ceilings that contain large amounts of water,
  • Floors where a fire burned underneath, and
  • Doorways with partially burned frames.

The fire department forces a tremendous amount of water into your home to make everything wet and incapable of combusting. All that water travels downhill, with much of it becoming trapped in your house’s structure, including ceilings. Water is quite dense, and a gallon weighs about eight pounds. Ceilings cannot hold the extra weight of a couple of dozen gallons while the water simultaneously seeps into the ceiling’s drywall, causing it to soften.

Furniture and appliances, plus any people, combine to a tremendous weight a floor must bear without collapsing. Flames that char the underside of your floor can leave a room’s floorboards and the supporting frame much weaker than normal. The fire inspection report details such areas, and we rebuild these first. Otherwise, without this immediate attention, our equipment could cause the floor to cave in and slow any progress. We always make the area as safe as possible.

Doorways seem safe, but door frames can become unbalanced when opening or closing the door. If the structure has become loosened from the adjoining wall, the entire door and frame can fall onto someone.

Many other areas lose their previous integrity and become significantly less safe. For example, the individual steps and the framework of a staircase can become fragile, creating a hazardous situation.

To restore your home to safe condition after a fire, call SERVPRO of Pompano Beach at (954) 970-4942.

SERVPRO Can Perform Stormwater Damage Repair in Your Pompano Beach Home

11/21/2022 (Permalink)

servpro tech standing with client outside of house SERVPRO is available 24/7 to mitigate storm damage to your Pompano Beach property.

Stormwater Damage Repair in Pompano Beach Calls for Specialists

A storm leaves behind catastrophic damage, including water damage, to many homes. Stormwater comes with debris and possible sewage contamination, accelerating mold growth rate. Waiting for more than 24 hours before contacting an emergency service provider only makes the matter worse since you give the stormwater a chance to seep into more structures and items in your building and microorganisms more time to multiply.

When you need stormwater damage repair services in Pompano Beach, you can save yourself a lot of stress and losses by immediately contacting SERVPRO to complete the work. Before beginning the restoration process, we document the damage to give you an easier time when making claims with your insurance provider.

Corrosion can be another significant issue in the aftermath of stormwater damage. That’s why removing the water and drying out the property is essential. We can strip down damaged materials like flooring and drywall to studs to restore your home’s structural integrity.

Portable pumps help our SERVPRO team to remove stagnant water. We can dry damp belongings and hidden points by setting up air movers strategically. To locate points of elevated moisture levels, we use such equipment as:

  • Thermal imaging cameras
  • Moisture sensors
  • Moisture meters, and
  • Thermo-Hygrometers

SERVPRO also uses dehumidifiers to eliminate water vapor from the air. After drying and restoration, malodors may be present, making the house uninhabitable. To deal with this, our technicians carry out deodorization procedures. This is necessary since waiting for the molecules causing the smells to dissipate can take much longer.

A thermal fogger is one piece of equipment our technicians are well-versed in regarding deodorization. Our SERVPRO technicians use it to dispense petroleum or solvent-based deodorizers and, in the process, generate a fog or smoke made of minute particles almost the same size as those causing the odor. They then react with the residues and eradicate the odors instead of masking them.

Saving your house from inevitable damage means sourcing the necessary help as soon as possible. Contact SERVPRO of Pompano Beach or help at (954) 970-4942. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Pompano Beach, like the rest of South Florida, is humid year-round. Its residents are used to a certain level of moisture in the air, especially when storms are brewing. Even rooms under air conditioning can feel humid as soon as a window or door is left open and outside air seeps into the space. Naturally, mold exists in all homes to a certain extent and multiplies when conditions favor its spread. When your kitchen or bathroom sink leaks, the probability of mold growth increases, especially if the leak continues undetected for a while.

At SERVPRO, we focus on mold removal and remediation and achieve success thanks to specialized equipment. Our staff is certified in the most effective methods to manage mold infestations in your home. Among the basic steps of mold removal, you should expect the following-

  • Repairs and controlled demolition help us remove cabinet backing, drywall, and other materials showing irreparable evidence of mold.
  • Restoration with soda blasting and applying antimicrobial cleaning solutions help eliminate current growth and deter regrowth from happening. Like most things in life, prevention is your first line of defense when mold damage occurs.

  • We have solvents to break down residues to lessen the chance of corroding materials.
  • We implement abrasive blasting with walnut shells, sodium bicarbonate, and other materials to break soil bonds from materials.

The Range of Severe Weather Across the U.S. | SERVPRO® of Pompano Beach

In terms of total land area, the United States ranks second only behind Russia and Canada as one of the world’s largest countries (though China is also larger if outlying U.S. territories are excluded).

Because of the size of the United States, weather patterns differ greatly from one region to the next. Each region has its unique harsh seasonal weather, which encompasses a wide range of weather risks.

As spring approaches and warm and cold air masses collide around the nation, including here in Florida, we’ll look at what each of the country’s main regions may anticipate.

Heavy rains in the spring produce significant floods and water damage across the Pacific Northwest. It may also be challenging in higher elevation places due to melting and runoff from spring snowfall.

The Upper Midwest and Northeast experience the country’s longest and coldest winters. From Maine to the Dakotas, the region usually experiences frigid weather into late spring and sometimes early summer.

People and their homes may be at risk during this time of year in the Southwest and southern West Coast due to extreme heat waves. Tsunamis may be triggered by tectonic activity in the South Pacific, including Hawaii.

When conditions are dry and windy, wildfires become a worry in the central United States. Tornado Alley, which is prone to powerful spring storms, is also located in this region.

Tornadoes and heavy thunderstorms are prevalent in the inland parts of the Southeast as spring approaches. Along the coast in the Southeast, early-season storms and hurricanes are also a possibility including here in Florida, as you’re surely well aware of. Starting in the spring and all through summer, thunderstorms are frequent. Florida records the highest number of thunderstorms in the United States. The most dangerous weather risks here are hurricanes and severe coastal storms.

Even if your risk of severe weather differs from a friend or family member in another state, being prepared is essential. Everyone in the United States is vulnerable to a wide range of severe weather events.

If extreme weather leaves you with damage from water, fire or other elements, help is a click away. Contact SERVPRO for fast, expert recovery.

Get Your Emergency Preparedness Plan Started

Managing a company requires complete commitment. As a consequence, running a business is often not just a full-time job, it’s also an overtime job. You manage personnel, payroll and keep up to date with an ever-changing world, all while contending in the marketplace, innovating and maintaining a professional image on social media. It’s a lot, and walking this fragile tightrope is difficult.

That is why it very often takes only one disaster to permanently crumble a business. According to FEMA, 40% of small businesses fail to reopen after a catastrophic event, and a quarter of those that do reopen fail to stay open for over a year afterward.

In light of recent pandemic closures and an unpredictable future, it is more critical than ever for companies to have a sound emergency plan in place. But some 75% of small businesses lack a disaster recovery plan, which must change.

SERVPRO takes pleasure in aiding companies in our community in building an Emergency Ready Plan. We’ll assist you by doing an assessment of your area and business’ unique requirements and concerns.

We’ll cover everything from flash flooding emergencies to data recovery, so that if your organization ever faces a crisis, all you have to do is say the word and the plan will go into action immediately to minimize downtime and disruption. You and your staff will have a firm grasp on the chain of command, what to accomplish and when, as well as other suppliers and locations.

Don’t let poor planning cause your company journey to be much more difficult than it already is. With an Emergency Ready Plan in place, our SERVPRO technicians are prepared to get you back on track. It might be the difference between your firm recovering its footing after a disruption or closing for good.

When your business is ready to prioritize planning and safety to prevent extended downtime, contact SERVPRO to get the Emergency Ready Plan underway from the folks who know all there is to know about disaster and recovery.

A Look at Water Damage by the Numbers | SERVPRO® of Pompano Beach

1/21/2022 (Permalink)

If water damage catches you off-guard and leaves you all wet, you’ve got help on your side. Contact SERVPRO of Pompano Beach.

As a homeowner, you strive to keep your home looking nice and functioning properly. You have worked hard to have nice things, and you certainly don’t want anything jeopardizing that.

The reality is, sometimes no matter how hard you try, accidents or disasters happen, and at some point, your home is likely to succumb. While this isn’t always a fun fact, you have to be realistic and stay aware so that you can react if necessary.

While some accidents or disasters can’t be prevented, you can do your best to ensure that your home is well-equipped and maintained against water damage.

Wondering why that’s such a big deal? Get the facts:

  1. It is hard to believe, but this is the percentage of all home insurance claimsrelated to water damage. That means that one out of every four claims involves water damage, from either accidents or disasters.
  2. No, we aren’t referring to the TV show 48 Hours! It only takes 48 hours for water damage to become an even bigger, and more expensive, headache. Water damage can turn into mold damage within the 48-hour time span.
  3. This number is scary, as it’s the percentage of home basements that have water damage. No matter how hard you may try, water damage is bound to happen at some point. So, in order to prevent this one, you should regularly do a look-over to see if you can spot water damage before it becomes too significant.

10,234. We’re talking money here! That’s the average amount of an insurance claim for water damage. It only takes a small amount of water to cause a big disaster. It can cause sudden damage to floors, foundations and walls.

14,000. Seriously, this number is a big number on its own, but this is also the number of Americans who have water damage each day. It’s hard to believe, but every six seconds, water damage happened to someone’s home.

13,000,000,000. No, our keyboard didn’t get stuck on the zero! That’s actually the annual cost of water damage and removal for residents of the United States—$13 billion.

While the numbers can be overwhelming, the reality is that most water damage is preventable. Be proactive by keeping your home well-maintained. Replace or repair pipes, hoses, and water heaters as needed, and have leaks fixed as soon as you become aware of them.

If water damage catches you off-guard and leaves you all wet, you’ve got help on your side. Contact SERVPRO to see how we can quickly and fully restore water damage to your home or business.

Disasters Don’t Sleep, but Neither Do We

1/19/2022 (Permalink)

Water disasters, weather events and fires don’t really care what time it is. When you’re fast asleep with strict instructions not to be awakened, they don’t mind a bit barging in and causing chaos. Middle of the night? Fine. Holiday weekend? Feliz Desastre and Sorpresa de Ano Nuevo.

You get the point. Disasters don’t have set hours, and they don’t wait for convenient times before striking your home or business.

Fortunately for you, on the other side of this screen there’s an expert waiting to talk to you when something hits. And all it takes is one press of the big red button for a host of SERVPRO agents to activate and converge upon your emergency.

And when it comes to disaster mitigation, speed definitely matters. Here’s why.

After a fire. The flames get all the press, and they’re definitely a major source of destruction. But the lesser-touted foes of fire damage set in afterward: Soot, the leftover black stuff after a fire, is the result of incomplete combustion during the fire, and if fills every available crevice and covers surfaces completely. And within only a few short hours, soot and smoke damage become permanent, meaning your recovery job goes from a cleanup to a replacement of the affected areas.

After water damage. When water comes rushing into your home or business, you’ve got a very limited time—48 hours, in fact—before mold growth begins, after which your home may become compromised. The quicker your building can be cleared and dried, the better.

On top of these examples, weather events and massive storms can create headaches without warning and leave you with situations that need immediate resolution.

Everything from a hole in the roof to a flood caused by a relentless storm can make life difficult on a moment’s notice. When these surprises arise, don’t panic, and certainly don’t wait. We’re up, and we’re waiting on you to click or call.

Trust SERVPRO when moments matter most.

When you need help after a home or business disaster, fast service is a priority, and there’s nobody faster or more prepared than SERVPRO. Call us anytime to take advantage of our 24-hour emergency service.

Keeping Your Pets Safe in a Home Fire

9/25/2021 (Permalink)

While fires are scary to think about, it is necessary to take the right steps in prevention and preparation to ensure your furry friend is safe.

While it is every pet owner's nightmare to have their animal trapped in a fire, unfortunately these circumstances do occur. According to the National Fire Protection Association, pets and other animals are responsible for about 750 fires in the home each year, including involving cooking equipment, fireplaces, chimneys, space heaters, lamps, bulbs, electrical wiring, and candles. Because there are many times when pets are left in the house alone, monitoring and preventing potential fire hazards in your home could save your pets life.

As a responsible and loving pet parent, it is important to understand these circumstances and utilize the following steps to prevent a tragedy.

Prevention for Pet Fires

While it is not always possible, hands down the best way to protect your pet from a fire is to prevent it from occurring in the first place. Your pet should never be unattended in any areas that contain an open flame, like fireplaces, lit candles, or the kitchen. In fact, in a pet household, a flameless candle is often in much safer alternative to an open flame. Even if the tail of an animal knocks it over, it will be safe from preventing any harm.

Mitigate Hazards in the Kitchen

As the most common place for open flame to occur in the home, it is absolutely crucial 2 fireproof your kitchen. One of the biggest ways to do this is to use stove knob covers that prevents your pets from accidentally turning on the burners of your stove top. If you do not have knob covers, you can also just remove the knobs when you are not home to prevent any curious pets from climbing in the kitchen and starting a fire.

Ensure First Responders Know You Have a Pet

Having a pet alert decal in your front window alerts firefighters that there is an animal in the home they need to protect. Especially if you are not home when the fire occurs, this window decal will tell the firefighters how many pets are inside of the home. If you crate your animal while away, it is a good idea to keep the crate close to the front door in case of an emergency.

Consider a Monitored Smoke Alarm

While you obviously need to have a working smoke detector in your home, some pet owners take it a step further by investing in a monitored smoke alarm. This monitored smoke alarm can alert the fire department quicker, which is crucial if your pet is still inside the home.

While this tragedy is often scary to think about, it is necessary to take the right steps in prevention and preparation to ensure your furry friend is safe in a fire. As always, SERVPRO of Pompano Beach is here for you should a fire occur in your home or business. Our fire damage experts are on call and ready to help immediately in the event of an emergency.

Facts about Mold Growth in South Florida's Humidity

9/13/2021 (Permalink)

The key to preventing mold growth is reducing and controlling the amount of water and moisture in your home.

In a place with as much humidity as South Florida, it is inevitable for mold to exist. Because it is very possible to be exposed to mold in South Florida, it is very smart to be properly educated on the topic. Here are some of the most common questions and fast facts about mold:

What is mold?

Mold is a type of fungi that is naturally produced both inside and outside. As a fungus, mold helps decompose materials that are already dead such as soil, plants, food, along with other items found in nature. Through their “spores”, mold can easily spread through the air and multiply in other places. Mold thrives in humid environments, which is why it is commonly found indoors in places like basements and showers.

How does mold grow?

As mentioned above, humid environments provide a place for mold to flourish. In order to grow and multiply, mold only needs three things: nutrients, a surface to grow on, and moisture. Oftentimes, building materials such as wood and sheetrock provide the nutrients that are required for mold to grow. As long as there is enough moisture, there is a potential chance of mold.

What are some of the common causes of mold?

Anywhere that brings moisture, is a place that can cause mold. Some examples of this include:

  • Outside flooding (storms, overflowing lakes, streams, etc.)
  • Indoor flooding (sinks, tubs, toilets, sewage systems, etc.)
  • Poor ventilation in the kitchen or bathroom from steam
  • Plumbing leaks or broken/clogged piped
  • Buildup of condensation on metal pipes, concreate surfaces, tiles, or even brick
  • Wet and damp clothing
  • Leaking air-conditioning system

How can I tell if there is mold growth in my home?

Usually, any indoor mode growth can be seen or smelled. Some of the most common characteristics of mold include:

  • Visible growth that may have a cotton, velvet, rough, or leathery texture and colors such as white, gray, black, brown, yellow, or green
  • An odor that smells earthy or musty
  • Concentrated around signs of water damage (leaks, standing water, water stains, condensation, etc.)

Additionally, the Florida Department of Health does not encourage mold testing or sampling. Testing for mold can be a very expensive endeavor and is often not worth it if it's very clear that a problem already exists. According to their rule, you should investigate a mold problem not test it.

How can I prevent mold growth?

The key to preventing mold growth is reducing and controlling the amount of water and moisture in your home. To do this, you should ensure to clean up any spills as soon as possible, dry out any wet building materials or carpets, use a dehumidifier or air conditioning system to keep the humidity level below 60%, and avoid any carpeting in the bathrooms or basements.

Surviving Slow Season as a Small Business Owner

8/13/2021 (Permalink)

Slow seasons provide a variety of opportunities for small business owners.

The summer season is often a challenge for small business owners in South Florida. As snowbirds head north, the reduction in foot traffic really hurts companies’ ability to draw new customers through the door. Beyond less populated areas, the pandemic has also put a big hiccup in small business owners’ plans for growth. While things like seasonal traveling and an unexpected pandemic are difficult to navigate and impossible to predict, keeping the foot on the gas for new business is critical to surviving. Far too many business owners fail to plan for the worst and are thus stuck in a precarious position during the slow season.

Slow seasons provide a variety of opportunities for small business owners. Remaining open to new ideas, prospective partnerships, and creative strategy is essential for small business owners to remain competitive during rough patches in sales. Below we go over some useful tactics that have worked for small business owners to keep numbers up during a slow season.

Improving Small Business Profit Opportunity During Slow Months

Anticipating slow months means hoping for the best and preparing for the worst. Keeping your staff motivated during slower months can be difficult, but combining creativity with incentive serves as a great method of encouragement. When there is a lull in business, the best leaders turn inward and show (by example) how to thrive in challenging times. The following are some great ideas for maintaining a steady flow of business during any kind of slow season:

  • Adjust marketing plans to account for slow months – offering discounts on popular items
  • Host a special event in your store
  • Utilize social media to entice new business and encourage repeat customers
  • Promote your store’s safety policies in relation to COVID preparedness
  • Consider sponsoring an event in the local community
  • Create an incentive program for your staff where the highest sellers are eligible for an additional day off
  • Establish a loyalty program for past customers and promote it via social media and email marketing
  • Partner with another likeminded local business and cross-promote each other’s products/services
  • Be a true leader – get to the store early and leave late, be motivational, and keep spirits high
  • Use downtime to pinpoint internal inefficiencies and plan future marketing strategy

Slow seasons do not have to be scary for small business owners. Use this time to revamp current practices, up your customer service game, and motivate your employees to be their best at all times. Things like promotional events and employee sales incentives will go a long way in combating the dreaded slow season. As a business owner, it is important to plan ahead and prepare your business and its staff to not only survive, but thrive during slow months.

Fire Safety Tips for Restaurant Owners

8/2/2021 (Permalink)

Accidents happen, but the most prepared restaurant owners are best able to protect their staff and their property.

Restaurant kitchens are filled with open flames, electrical equipment, and fast-moving employees, which unfortunately can all serve as fire hazards. In fact, the National Fire Data Center reports that the United States suffers from approximately $165 million in damages every year, with the cost of each fire ranging from an average of $1,000 to $60,000, depending on the severity. More than just property damage, fires threaten the safety of your employees, customers, and profitability of your business as a whole.

Even though accidents happen, you want to make sure that you and your team are best suited to prevent a disaster before it occurs and minimize any possibility of harm.

Here are some of the top fire safety tips for restaurant owners:

Know The Risks of Your Facility

You should take time to inspect any unique risks or hazards in your facility. This includes taking note of potentially flammable liquids, electrical equipment, or combustible materials. When inspecting your property, make sure that all fire safety equipment, like fire extinguishers, are up to date and in the correct place.

Regularly Inspect Fire Extinguishers and Equipment

For fire extinguishers, you should check their functionality at least once a month and up to fire code standards. It is important to test fire alarms and make sure they are functioning properly to alert your staff and customers in case of an emergency. This also includes inspecting your exit signs and emergency lights to ensure they work if the power is cut off. Making sure all of these measures are functioning properly can ensure the safety of everyone.

Conduct Staff Training

Around 75% of Americans have never actually operated a fire extinguisher. For fire safety, all of your staff should go through hands-on training, so they know what to do in an emergency. In some cases, local fire departments may be willing to conduct fire safety training with your team. Your staff should also be aware of basic kitchen fire safety tips such as never throw water on a grease fire, clean up grease regularly, and the proper storage of flammable liquids.

Install a Fire Suppression System in the Kitchen

Due to the fact that over half of restaurant fires occur as a result of mishandling of equipment, a fire suppression system is necessary to control these accidents. A fire suppression system is used to control or extinguish fires and release clean gases to put out a fire when a hazard is detected. Your fire suppression systems should be inspected and maintained by a professional at least twice a year. These automatic systems can be a literal life saver during an emergency.

At SERVPRO of Pompano Beach, we have decades of experience in fire damage repair and restoration. When disaster strikes, we are the local company that you can count on.

Types of Biohazard Scenarios Requiring Cleanup

7/26/2021 (Permalink)

A biohazard cleaning consists of a team with regulated plan and procedures, dressed in personal protective equipment, and an intense training process

What is a Biohazard?

A biohazard, short for a biological hazard, is just any biological material that poses a risk or threat to human or animal health. Some examples of biohazards include mold, human bodily fluids, animal waste, industrial chemicals and much more. These dangerous biological materials may contain deathly viruses, bacteria, and parasites which can potentially lead to diseases such as tuberculosis, E coli, Lyme disease, and salmonella.

What is a Biohazard clean up?

Because these wastes can present serious harm to human health, it is important to be aware of which biohazard situations require professional cleaning. A biohazard cleaning consists of a team with regulated plan and procedures, dressed in personal protective equipment, and an intense training process to keep professional safe.

Here are some of the most common biohazard scenarios that require a cleanup:

Presence of blood/other bodily fluids:

In the unfortunate case of suicide, homicide, or a deathly incident, often a biohazards cleanup is required. However, for small accidents, like bleeding from accidentally cutting your finger while cooking, a biohazard cleanup is not required. If the pool of blood is larger than a typically dinner plate, a professional is needed to take care of the cleaning. In addition to the physical dangers of biohazard waste, there are also intense emotional and psychological consequences that may come with viewing an unattended death. In this case, it is important to let a professional take control of the situation.

Hoarding

When dealing with an intense hoarding situation, you likely have no idea what lies beneath the surface. An intense cleanup from hoarding should not be taken lightly, as human waste, dead animals, bug infestations, and mold are likely discovered in these situations and should be treated with immense professional biohazard care.

Animal infestation

Any type of animal carcass or feces are a spot where harmful pathogens and other viral organisms  can  thrive. Because this animal waste may contain dangerous biological material and can present a serious health hazard, it is important to remove it safely.

Industrial and workplace accidents (chemical spills)

While most labs and locations dealing with chemicals have protocols in place to deal with minor spills, for any major industrial or workplace chemical spill, biohazard professionals should be contacted to clean up.

Criminal activity/crime scene cleanup (meth labs, tear gas residue)

You should never attempt to clean up a site where chemical materials have been discovered, as chemicals used in illegal drugs, such as meth production, can contain serious health risks. Let professional handle the biohazard clean up!

At SERVPRO of Pompano Beach, we have years of experience in biohazard cleanups. Our biohazard team is trained to safely remove biohazards and dispose of them according to OSHA and health regulations. Contact us today for all of your biohazard cleanup and restoration needs.

Keeping Your Backyard Free from Storm Damage

7/20/2021 (Permalink)

Properly preparing your backyard for a storm is critical, as failing to do so can actually put your home in additional danger of storm damage.

Floridians know all too well how much of an impact storm damage can have during the summer months. While hurricane season can be unpredictable, summer showers are inevitable. This means that homeowners can expect heavy rainstorms frequently throughout the season. The severity of hurricanes and rainstorms ranges significantly, but it is important to take steps to prepare regardless of what size storm is expected. In fact, many homeowners find comfort in preparing for the worst, knowing that their home is protected no matter what.

When people think about hurricane or storm preparation, they typical consider to do list items like putting up hurricane shutters and making a run to the grocery store for essentials. But what about the backyard? Properly preparing your backyard for a storm is critical, as failing to do so can actually put your home in additional danger of storm damage. When a thunderstorm is coming, it is important to get into the habit of accounting for your backyard’s needs. The following advice is highly recommended for keeping your backyard free from storm damage:

Be Aware of Drainage Areas

Gutters, downspouts, and any storm drainage areas are some of the most overlooked areas of storm prep, but they are extremely significant. In the event of heavy rains or even flooding, drainage areas should be cleared of any debris to ensure that water runoff has a place to go.

Clean Up Shrubs and Trees

Inspect all of your home’s shrubs and trees to ensure that there is no rotting or damage on the branches or roots. Remove any dead branches, large palm seeds, or coconuts, as all of these things can quickly become hazards during heavy wind and rain.

Secure All Outdoor Items

Storm preparation is not simply taking in lawn chairs, it must also include any and all items that can serve as flying hazards during a big storm. From pool toys to patio furniture and from flower pots to tools, items left outside can create projectiles that can break windows, damage property, or even make their way to a neighbor’s property.

Plant Trees Strategically

Florida homeowners must consider the type of trees that they plan to plant in their backyards. A research team from the University of Florida recommends that shallow rooted trees not be planted in soft soil, as they can easily topple over during high winds. Trees that are not properly secured can cause a ton of storm damage to the backyard.

As we find ourselves in the heart of hurricane season, daily afternoon showers can make us numb to the real threat of a storm. While we have been lucky thus far, it is important for South Florida homeowners to take the above pieces of advice into considerations. As always, SERVPRO of Pompano Beach is dedicated to providing unmatched storm damage repair and restoration. We take pride in serving the Pompano Beach, Lighthouse Point, Coconut Creek, and Hillsboro Beach areas. Call our storm damage restoration team today if your home has sustained any water damage.

Detecting Water Damage Behind Your Walls

7/12/2021 (Permalink)

If you notice any of these signs in your home, you should seek the help of a professional to examine and fix the potential water damage or mold damage

While there are many obvious causes of water damage, such as floods and burst pipes, there are other potential culprits, such as water leaks behind walls, that can cause significant amount of damage before a homeowner notice.

The excess moisture from hidden water leaks can be absorbed by the flooring, drywall, ceilings, and even wooden support beams which can cause serious structural damage to your home. Additionally, water leaks can lead to mold growth in the walls of your home, and if left unaddressed, can damage your home long before the leak is even discovered. The longer the problem goes undetected, the harder it will be to repair.

In order to prevent these mishaps, it is crucial that homeowners are aware of how to detect water damage behind your walls.

How To Detect Water Damage Behind Walls

Staining/Discoloration

If water is leaking behind the wall, eventually there will be a stain or discoloration on the surface. The shape of this stain is most likely going to be irregular. If the strain grows in size, it is often a sign that there is a hidden plumbing leak.

Visible Mold Growth

If there is visible mold growth on the outside of your wall, that is a clear sign that your wall has a water leak. This often will appear as a dense cluster of black or brown dots and can cause health effects. Remember, mold can still be growing behind your wall even if you don’t see it.

Musty Odors

If you can’t see any mold, you may be able to smell it. Be on alert for a humid or musty odors, that may be as a result of a water leak that was never able to dry fully. Mold growth also gives off a pungent musty odor. If there are any suspicious smells, be sure to have a water damage professional take a look.

Peeling and/or Bubbling Paint and Wallpaper

A telltale sign of water damage behind walls is a change in texture. Walls in front of a water leak will often form visible bubbles and the paint will be twisted or distorted, forming rips or bubble-like shapes.

Warped Walls

If sheetrock absorbs too much water, it can become easily malleable. In this case, often times the wall will appear bent or curved. If any warping is detected, it is a clear sign of water damage behind your walls.

Buckled ceilings and floors

If you notice any space between the floor or ceiling, it can mean that the wall is full of moisture. Any signs of buckling floors or celling can usually lead to a problem.

If you notice any of these signs in your home, you should seek the help of a professional to examine and fix the potential water damage or mold damage. At SERVPRO of Pompano Beach, our water damage restoration team has years of experience in quick and efficient repair. Contact us today for any and all of your water damage repair and mold removal needs.

Intense storms can cause big problems for commercial property owners. There are some things you can do for your business in advance. By taking certain precautions, managers could minimize damage and help keep people and property safe.

Gather Information

Before a major system strikes, put together an emergency binder, thinking about storm damage. In it, keep records of insurance information and various suppliers. If evacuation must occur or the building is closed, take the folder with you to ensure that it is readily available and not harmed.

Have the following paperwork inside:

Insurance documents

Lease or mortgage agreements

Building layout

Property photos

Contact numbers

You should have information for a reputable water restoration team that can assess the property before you reopen, checking for damage and the need for repairs. SERVPRO of Pompano Beach (954) 970-4942.

Prepare the Facilities

As the winter storm picks up, spend time checking the place for potential issues. Have someone evaluate the roof, looking for loose shingles or peeling sides. You want to close up any possible cracks or holes, decreasing the chance of leaks or water stains. Don't forget to cut back trees or branches. They can be hazards that are capable of breaking through roofs or windows. The gutters should also be clear. Finally, go inside and make sure the generator is in proper working condition.

Educate Employees

Try your best to emphasize safety. Have an annual meeting discussing employee expectations and emergency procedures. Remind everyone to avoid windows and doorways. Try to have a location designated for bad weather, preferably a spot with no glass and lots of space. Inside, provide food, drinks and an emergency kit. Should a pipe break, have a protocol in place. Workers should know how to shut off the main lines and who to call.

Your company is valuable, and so are your employees, don't underestimate the power of a winter storm. Spend time now gathering paperwork and devising plans.

If you have storm damage to your commercial property, don't hesitate to call restoration experts, SERVPRO of Pompano Beach (954) 970-4942.

Understanding Residential Fires

6/23/2021 (Permalink)

To stop a fire from spreading, you need to eliminate one or more of the 3 points of the triangle.

A fire can start in a number of ways, but they usually fall into one of two categories: fires caused by heat igniting combustible materials, and those caused by chemical reactions.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), there are more than 350,000 home fires in the U.S. each year, leading to around 2,000 deaths.

A spark from a lighter can get a fire going, but many times fires are sparked by things like poor electrical wiring, a stove that hasn’t been turned off or a candle that’s been left unattended.

Keeping a fire going, requires three things:

Fuel [something to burn – wood, paper, oil, coal, etc.]

Oxygen – which is already in the air around us

Heat

If there is ample supply of these three entities, a fire can continue indefinitely. This is what makes a fire so dangerous.

So, how do you put a fire out?

To stop a fire from spreading, you need to eliminate one or more of the 3 points of the triangle. Most home owners do not own a fire extinguisher. What makes these devices so important and necessary is that they do exactly that, they remove the 3 ingredients for a fire. They cool off heat and smother the flame preventing oxygen from contacting the fuel. This allows the fire to be completely put out.
But what happens if you didn’t have this and you experience a fire loss?

That’s where SERVPRO of Pompano Beach comes in. Our trained experts are here to help restore your home or business back to normal as quickly as possible. One of the first things to understand about mold prevention in your home, is that often mold problems arise from water damage. Fortunately, understanding how water caused damage can lead to mold can help you take the proper mitigation steps.

Here are three things you may want to know.

1. Mold Grows in Moist Areas

The first thing to understand about mold growth is that spore colonies grow best in areas of high moisture. Water can often leave behind areas of dampness which can then turn into a prime habitat for mold spores. These may also include darker areas such as under flooring, or cracks between tile.

2. Water Damage can Leave Rot

Another thing to understand about mold prevention is that damage caused by water can often lead to rot. This in turn can provide food for mold spores to thrive off of. Mold is classified as a fungi which means it grows from other organic materials under the correct conditions. Rotting drywall, flooring, or other damp materials found in the home after flooding or water problems can provide a source of nourishment for the spores.

3. Unseen Damage Can Create a Mold Habitat

If you do have damage caused by water in the home that it's best to contact a water damage restoration service as quickly as possible. This is because if left untreated water can soak into unseen areas and begin creating the conditions where mold can potentially grow. A professional will often be able to find these unseen areas before major problems can occur.

Mold and Water Damage

It's important for mold prevention to understand how damage caused by water can become potential mold issues. Remember that mold tends to grow in moist areas, that water damage can leave rot which mold feeds on, and that any unseen damage can also lead to large spore habitats. If you have any questions a professional can help.

A delay of just a few hours can greatly increase the severity of the water damage.

SERVPRO of Pompano Beach is available 24 hours a day for water emergencies, large or small. When you are dealing with water damage, immediate action is crucial.

Controlling Small Fires Safely

5/14/2021 (Permalink)

A simple way to remember what to do in a fire

Fire Damage In Pompano Beach

Fire damage is one of the most common forms of homeowner’s insurance claims in Pompano Beach.  By far the best way to deal with small fires is to use a fire extinguisher early to douse the flames.

Using an Extinguisher Is Easy If You Know How
The simplest method of handling an extinguisher is to use PASS:

Pull the safety pin out.

Aim low – at the base of the flame.

Squeeze the handle.

Sweep from side to side

Keep going back and forth until all the flames are out. Carefully watch the area, since flames can reappear even hours after a fire in some conditions. If your fire extinguisher is low on pressure, grab another one if it’s nearby to be ready for another round.

Fires Are Incredibly Dangerous

Fires are incredibly dangerous events and are one of the most common types of emergency. Home fires kill an average of seven people in the U.S. every day. Besides the heat, smoke and toxic gases are released and can quickly overcome even healthy adults. Once a room gets warm enough, an event called a flashover will instantly ignite all flammable surfaces, and even professional fire fighters in full protective gear are occasionally killed by this.

If you have the slightest doubt about a fire, if it’s growing rapidly or if the extinguisher isn’t having much impact, get out immediately and call 911. Kitchen fires are especially dangerous, since the oils and grease can be highly resistant to fire-fighting methods and can be accidentally spread around by the wrong type of suppression methods.

Using a fire extinguisher on small fires is an excellent way to avoid expensive fire damage cleanup in Pompano Beach. It's important to use common sense and let trained fire fighters handle the more dangerous situations.

SERVPRO of Pompano Beach specializes in the cleanup and restoration of residential and commercial property after a fire, smoke or water damage event. Pompano Beach Restoration Experts And Your Water Damage

You don't want to deal with pipe burst cleanup. Not only is it overwhelming, but you may not really be fixing the problem. As a business owner you want to prioritize safety and cleanliness. Therefore, when water damage occurs, evaluate the situation and consider whether your place would benefit from a professional service.

Signs of Trouble

Should you call in SERVPRO of Pompano? Think about the type of liquid. Category 3 sources host microbes, allowing bacteria to linger and fester. You'll need more than a bottle of bleach to sanitize. Avoid a hazard and contact a water remediation company, experts who can evaluate the extent or needed repair. The following would count in this category:

Sewer breaks

External flood waters

Toilet overflows

In addition, clean water can also prove problematic. If moisture has stayed in the walls, floor or ceiling for too long, it could lead to mold buildup. Don't assume the penetration didn't happen. If you have any questions, smell a foul odor, or notice mold spores, call in help immediately.

When SERVPRO of Pompano technicians arrive, they will survey the trouble, shutting off any water sources and determining the source. This needs quick repair to eliminate further complications. SERVPRO of Pompano Beach technicians assess the extent of destruction, including the cost and time of sewer or pipe burst cleanup. During this time, moisture levels are read from numerous areas. Dehumidifiers are brought in, airing out rooms until they meet national standards. Anything contaminated too much is removed and the room may be sealed off to prevent entrance or exit.

With the broken pipe corrected, the team gets started replacing anything destroyed. The company can help not only replace ruined wall structures, but they are able to survey technology and fixtures, salvaging items that you may have deemed long gone.

Don't tackle that pipe burst cleanup on your own. Water may look easy to handle, but it really could lead to serious concerns. If it's drenched, smells or spotted, it's time to get help.

SERVPRO of Pompano Beach Responds Quickly To Your Water Damage

Commercial property owners and managers in Pompano Beach, have many responsibilities. One of those responsibilities is storm preparedness. In order to ensure the safety of tenants and protect the building from extensive storm damage, owners and managers should work together to focus on three vital steps.

Emergency Plan

Knowing what you are going to do before bad weather strikes can help keep everyone calm and safe during the storm. A strong emergency plan includes:

Shelter and evacuation plans

Emergency contact list, including insurance and storm cleanup professionals

Reliable communication system

Division of responsibilities

Backup of vital records, stored remotely

Once a plan is made, it must be practiced and perfected. That way, when a storm does hit, employees can move through the plan like clockwork.

Property Protection

When the weather service indicates that a devastating storm is on its way, the property manager should complete a walkthrough of the property as part of the storm preparedness plan. Loose limbs or branches on trees should be trimmed. All outdoor furniture should be secured. Items that are small enough should be taken inside.

Accurate Reporting

Once the storm has passed, property management should complete another walkthrough to document all wind and flood damage that the storm left in its wake. Pictures and video of the damage can be helpful to assist in filing the claim with the insurance company. An assessment from flood cleanup professionals should be arranged so that you can get an estimate of how much the restoration process is going to cost. Remember to communicate consistently with tenants to keep them informed about the status of the property and the timeline for returning.

Property managers have quite a few storm preparedness responsibilities. Planning ahead is key to making sure that everyone makes it through the storm safely and that the property is still standing after the storm passes. Water damaged that isn't treated can lead to mold. Remember mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Types of Biohazards

Professional Technicians Have Advice For Your Home After A Fire

In Pompano Beach, if you have fire damage call us today SERVPRO of Pompano Beach (954) 970-4942.

Fire Damage In Pompano

After a fire SERVPRO of Pompano Beach technicians may recommend a board up. Boarding up can be helpful if it will take time before the structure can be cleaned and rebuilt. An emergency board up involves affixing plywood to cover breaches in a structure. Broken windows or damaged walls are of primary concern, and wood may be used alongside tarps to protect a damaged roof. Here are several ways that boarding up can limit damage.

Keep Out Moisture and Debris

Boards can keep out external contaminants that could heighten the risk of secondary damage. Covering a breach can keep out the following sources of contamination or debris:

Animals

Rain

Tree branches and leaves

A homeowner should arrange for boarding up to take place as soon as possible. Timely mitigation can prevent damage from becoming more extensive or severe prior to cleanup and restoration.

Prove Mitigation Efforts to Insurers

Insurance companies require policyholders to do everything they can to limit damage, such as a board up and other mitigation measures. It is important to document the damage in photos or videos before taking any steps to limit or lessen the damage.

Limit Trespassing and Unauthorized Access

Trespassing is a major risk at a damaged structure. Foot traffic grinds soot into flooring and other building materials. Trespassers may also strip valuable components, such as metals, from a structure. Boarding up can help to limit losses.

An emergency board up will be most effective if it takes place as quickly as possible after flames have been extinguished. While a residence may be filled with contaminated water from fire suppression efforts, additional water and debris may otherwise enter and cause conditions to further degrade.

When a homeowner needs to board up a damaged home they can rely on a one-stop shop for fire damage mitigation and restoration services, SERVPRO of Pompano Beach (954) 970-4942.

Water Damage In Pompano Homes and Businesses

Are All Water Disasters The Same?

Absolutely not. Water damage is completely unique to each home, and the magnitude of the damage. It is important to know whether the water is clean water or contaminated. Because of this, SERVPRO of Pompano Beach must assess the job thoroughly to determine the proper course of action needed to get you back on your feet.

How Do We Do It?

Water Extraction

Water extraction uses vacuum-type machinery to effectively remove all the surface water damage that is visible. Once the source has been stopped, our skilled team of technicians and crew chiefs systematically begin removing the water from furniture as well as carpets and other forms of flooring. This process stops the furthering of any water intrusion and prevents any more damage to your property.

Dehumidification

Air has water in it. When we watch the weather on our local news stations, they give us the relative humidity. Humidity is the amount of water in your air. Florida is notorious for having higher levels of humidity than some of the less tropical states in the U.S. While most humidity is taken out of your home via your air conditioning system, when water loss happens the levels of moisture are too much for your HVAC system to take out on its own. Our dehumidifiers raise the temperature level in the home or business and literally suck the moisture out of the surrounding area leaving your home dry and ready to move forward with repairs.

Flooding and water damage is very invasive. Water quickly spreads throughout your home and gets absorbed into floors, walls, furniture, and more. SERVPRO of Pompano arrives quickly and starts the water extraction process almost immediately. This immediate response helps to minimize the damage and the cleaning and restoration costs.

SERVPRO of Pompano Beach is excited to begin the mitigation process in your place of business or your home. And please tell your friends. You never know you need us until you need us. SERVPRO has been faithfully serving the community for over 50 years and we would love to be your restoration service provider.

Understanding Commercial Fire Suppression Might Save Your Pompano Business

2/26/2021 (Permalink)

A fire sprinkler system can take out a fire before it gets a good start.

Commercial Building Fires In Pompano Beach

Fire sprinklers can control a fire while the fire is still small. According to the National Fire Protection Association, some type of sprinkler was present in an estimated average of 49,840 (10%) reported structure fires during 2010 to 2014. Automatic extinguishing systems (AES) are designed to control fires until the fire department arrives.

Your commercial building is required to have a fire suppression system. In a fire, that system might just save lives, spare contents or possibly even your entire business. A fire sprinkler system can take out a fire before it gets a good start. There needs to be a good fit between your sprinkler system and the kind of property it’s protecting.

What Qualities Do All Sprinkler Systems Have in Common?

They’re all:

Fast
Efficient
Customizable
Versatile

Which fire sprinkler system is right for your commercial building?

There are two main categories:

Wet Pipe System

A wet pipe system is comprised of steel pipes, which are filled with water at all times. This can be a good or bad thing. The biggest advantage of these systems is that when activated they start working immediately. They are the most reliable due to the simple design. They are also the easiest to install and require the least amount of maintenance. A big disadvantage is that they could freeze in an inadequately heated environment, causing the sprinkler pipes to burst. If a false alarm occurs, there is also a risk of the sprinklers causing unnecessary water damage.

Dry Pipe System

The pipes in a dry pipe system are filled with compressed air. This type of system is a little slower to distribute the water due to water not being in the pipes at all times. Since the dry pipe system has less risk of accidental activation, they are ideal for buildings with very valuable or irreplaceable items. These systems require more maintenance and are more difficult to install, making them more labor-intensive and expensive. However, there are several variations of the dry pipe system which add extra layers of protection against accidental activation.

The right type of fire sprinkler system can make all the difference to the well-being of your employees and the building within which they work. If your property sustains water damage from your sprinkler system after a fire, you may want to hire fire damage restoration experts to handle all of your fire sprinkler cleanup needs.

Pompano Beach Water Damage And Mold, Time To Call SERVPRO of Pompano Beach

SERVPRO of Pompano Beach professionals have the advanced training and equipment needed to keep this from turning into a mold mess.

In Pompano Beach there are a lot of exciting activities and adventures to enjoy. The same can be said for Coconut Creek and Lighthouse Point. With the beautiful beaches, fishing, and diving it's understandable that household repairs are sometimes neglected.

If you notice a leak in your bathroom for instance, take care of it right away. This will likely involve bringing the certified professionals of SERVPRO of Pompano Beach. If you suspect you might have mold as a result of the water damage, call SERVPRO of Pompano Beach today (954) 970-4942.

Recognizing that you have a shower or bathtub leak is easy, but understanding the exact source and how to repair it may be a challenge. Here are some basic tips to help you pinpoint your leak in Pompano Beach, FL.

3 Kinds of Shower Leaks

You may have noticed your bathtub leak by seeing wet floorboards or a stained ceiling directly under the bathroom. A combination of simple tests and inspection can help determine what kind of leak you have.

1. Tiles. Clues that your tiles are leaking include noticeable grout problems, like crumbling, broken pieces and mold growth.

2. Splash. Your shower door may need some maintenance. Look for clues like water on the floor, or soaked walls and baseboards just outside the shower area. Test for this by splashing the shower door with some water and watch to see if it flows outside the door.

3. Drain. A shower pan leak or bathtub drain leak will probably cause a lot more damage than a splash leak. You may notice a wet ceiling in the room or crawlspace below. You can test for a drain pan leak by getting a reliable test plug from the hardware store. Plug the drain and fill the basin with water. Note the water level and check it after an hour to see if there has been any water loss. If there has, then you probably have a crack in the seal around your drain or in the drain pan.

Getting Help

Now you know how to identify the source of a shower or bathtub leak. Hopefully, it’s simple to resolve, like replacing a shower door or fresh caulk. If the leak has existed for a while and you have a water damaged ceiling, floor or baseboards, then contact SERVPRO of Pompano Beach (954) 970-4942 to make sure the repairs are done properly and mold is cleaned correctly.

Understanding What Water Damage Could Do To Your Pompano Beach Business

1/26/2021 (Permalink)

Don't let water damage become a long term problem for your home or business, call the professionals. SERVPRO of Pompano Beach (954) 970-4942

Water damage accounts for many of the commercial property insurance claims each year. Many commercial property owners have dealt with water damages in one form or another. Business owners often feel qualified to deal with the cleanup on their own. Often they fail to consider that the amount of dirt and contamination in the water could be costly.

Category 1: Clean water usually comes straight from clean pipes and plumbing fixtures. Any contaminants in this water were picked up after flood water left the pipes.

Category 2: Gray water may contain urine, soapy water, and other dirt. It may come from sump pumps or the toilet.

Category 3: Black water causes the most dangerous types of damage because it may carry sewage, human waste, bacteria, and chemicals. It may come from sewage backups or flooding caused by heavy storms.

While category 1 water damage is often handled by property owners, anything else should be turned over to water damage cleanup and remediation professionals.

Why can't you handle black water damage on your own?

One of the most important reasons is the lack of preparation and training. Most property owners don't have access to the appropriate equipment and cleaning supplies to prevent contaminants from spreading. Black water can't just be dumped back into the municipal water supply. Technicians are prepared to deal with the contaminated fluids appropriately.

Health and Safety

Another reason you shouldn't handle Category 3 flood water is the potential for health risks. Physical contact with the substances in the water could cause sickness and other problems. You and the occupants in the building should stay as far away as possible.

Long-Term Damage

Black water damage, whether from a toilet overflow or heavy rains, can lead to mold growth and other long-term problems. Professionals know how to pinpoint high-risk areas in your building and will treat the property to prevent this type of trouble.

If you have water damage call the professionals. SERVPRO of Pompano Beach (954) 970-4942.

Understanding Flooding And Your Property In Pompano Beach

1/5/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Pompano Beach has the training, experience, and equipment to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Flooding In Pompano Beach

Pompano Beach residents and homeowners in surrounding areas like Lighthouse Point and Coconut Creek know that flooding is a risk. There are four major types of flooding that occur in this part of South Florida.

Canal Flooding in Pompano

Storm water from upstream areas eventually empty into the Intracoastal Waterway through these canals. Water levels in these canals rise during a storm and this limits the ability of Pompano Beach's storm water system to discharge.

Tidal Flooding

Some waterways in the City of Pompano Beach are influenced by tidal fluctuations, and this contributes to flooding problems.

Severe Weather Flooding

Severe weather flooding occurs when storms cause heavy rain. The rain falls too quickly for the storm water systems and canals to handle the significant amount of flow.

Coastal Flooding

The risk of flooding in Pompano Beach can be increased when there are higher water levels within the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway due to storm surge.

So What Can You Do Avoid Extensive Damage In Pompano Beach?

Maintain Your Home to Prevent Water Build-Up

In order to minimize storm damage to your home, you should be sure to perform proper maintenance, even when you are not expecting bad weather. To prevent moisture from building inside the walls, perform regular inspections of your home’s exterior to check for gaps or cracks. You should also make sure that all of your windows’ seals are working properly. Don’t forget to clean out your storm drains and gutters as well, since clogged ones can cause water to back up and leak into your home.

Protect Your Property and Belongings

If you know that you may have flood damage, you can prepare by protecting your belongings. A waterproof safe is a great option for any important documents. You can store smaller items in waterproof and air-tight containers while moving whatever you can to a higher location, like a shelf or a second floor. If you can move your furniture, you may want to do that as well. Covering it with plastic can reduce damage.

Have an Evacuation Plan

While your home is important, your family is more so. If the flooding becomes an emergency, you should be ready to move to a safer area. Create a plan for how you will leave the house and where you will go. To make sure that everyone is prepared, it might be a good idea to practice beforehand.

Being prepared for flooding can help you protect what’s important, but you will likely not be able to save everything. If your home or belongings are damaged, a water damage remediation service can help restore your house and any items that are not beyond repair.

Sometimes all the knowledge and preparation aren't enough to stop storm damage to your home or business. That's when it's time to reach out to trained, certified experts. SERVPRO of Pompano Beach is ready to take your call and restore your property. Call us (954) 934-5555.

Reason For Concern And Awareness

There are many reasons to be concerned about flooding in your Pompano Beach business. The FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) indicate that more than 32% of the buildings in the City of Pompano Beach are in a Special Flood Hazard Area.

According to the City of Pompano Beach, constant water flow through canals, especially during heavy storms, is essential to flood damage protection in the City. With all of the precautions taken, flooding can still happen to your Pompano Beach commercial site.

Commercial Drying Services In Pompano Beach

A public library is a great resource, and it is not just the public library that stores books in Pompano Beach. Many businesses such as law firms or educational establishments have a library that is a vital part of their company. Naturally, you do not want your business’ or institutions’ books to get wet, and in the event of water damage, you should call SERVPRO of Pompano Beach at (954) 970-4942.

Professional water removal in Pompano Beach

SERVPRO of Pompano Beach can help preserve and save books. Even books that are entirely soaked might be salvageable using a robust process known as freeze drying. First, documents are freeze dried to preserve their current state. Then, we place them in a specialist freeze-drying chamber, and all air is suctioned out. A combination of pressure and temperature are used to evaporate water and collect it outside the chamber.

SERVPRO of Pompano Beach understands that the sight of wet books and papers is upsetting and it is natural to want to take action as soon as possible. We recommend caution and offer the following guidelines.

Stop water flow if it is safe to do so, to prevent further harm to delicate books.

We suggest taking unaffected papers to another, drier, location if you can, to prevent them from being affected.

It is essential that the affected area is kept dry and cold. We recommend using a dehumidifier if possible to reduce humidity. You can use a fan for moving the air and aiding the drying process. Our IICRC-certified technicians arrive equipped with dehumidifiers and fans ready to do the job.

Be very careful with water-logged books. Do not open the volumes, remove their bindings, or fan the pages. Handle each item as little as possible until our staff arrives.

If water is still dripping from a leak or broken pipe or roof, spread plastic sheeting over collections to protect them from drips.

Swift action is vitally important. The sooner books are frozen, the higher the chance of salvaging them successfully. That is why we recommend putting in a call to SERVPRO as soon as you can. Our IICRC certified technicians are ready to remove water from the floor, reduce humidity, encourage evaporation and, most importantly, carefully take your books for freeze-drying.

For help with wet books in Pompano Beach and surrounding areas, call SERVPRO of Pompano Beach at (954) 970-4942 today.

Candles are beautiful, fragrant and relaxing. A candle is a possible fire hazard if it's not properly monitored. A candle is an open flame that can increase the risk of a fire.

The following three basic rules to avoid a candle fire came directly from a study done by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Number one rule: Never leave a burning candle unattended. It may seem like a good idea to leave your candle burning so your house could soak up the fragrance, but it's a really bad idea considering there is no one to watch it in case of an emergency situation.

Number two rule: Never burn a candle on or near anything that may catch on fire.

Number three rule: Keep candles out of the reach of both children and pets.

Our SERVPRO of Pompano Beach team understands the stress and confusion that goes hand in hand with a loss of any kind. Not only can you experience fire, smoke, and soot damage, your property will most likely also suffer from water damage due to firefighting efforts.
Our technicians will take care of your family and property from start to finish!

Just Because Hurricane Season Is Winding Down Doesn't Mean You Shouldn't Be Storm Ready

11/17/2020 (Permalink)

If you have been a Florida resident for a while, you know that just because hurricane season is winding down it's no time to let your guard down.

Hurricane season in Florida spans from June to November each year. This is the period of time during the year when the seas are at their warmest and the air is the most humid, creating perfect conditions for a hurricane to develop.

For those who haven’t experienced a hurricane while residing in Florida, here are some facts about these destructive storms:

Hurricanes can have wind speeds of over 160 mph and unleash more than 2.4 trillion gallons of rain a day
40% of the hurricanes that occur in the U.S. hit Florida
One of the costliest hurricanes to make landfall was Hurricane Katrina, a Category 5 storm that was famous for breaking levees in Louisiana and ravaging the state with floods. Damages cost an estimated $108 billion.

Hurricanes are very destructive in nature, so it is important to be ready for them! If a hurricane is projected to affect your area, be sure to follow these tips to stay safe:

Leave low lying areas

Protect windows with plywood boards, or storm shutters

Secure outside objects

Make sure you have plenty of fuel and water

Have several days supply of food and water for each family member

If called to evacuate, do so immediately
After a storm, if your home has experienced storm damage, be sure to call SERVPRO of Pompano Beach at (954) 970-4942 and let us help you make your home whole again! We are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Be safe this hurricane season!

Avoiding Leaks And Mold In Your Pompano Beach Bathroom

10/16/2020 (Permalink)

Bathroom ventilation can maintain low moisture levels and prevent the growth of mold

Finding A Bathroom Leak Today, Might Help You Avoid Finding Mold Tomorrow

A full bathroom contains several fixtures that depend on water in order to function. This room is a prime location for water damage involving clean Category One water or contaminated Category Two or Category Three water. Here are three ways to limit damage caused by improper sealing, faulty bath and shower components or a leaking toilet.

1. Determine the Source

The first indication of a leak may involve a spray from a supply line or water seeping out from around the base of a toilet. If a shower pan or drain is leaking, signs of damage may become evident on the ceiling below a bath that is situated on the second floor or higher, or in a basement or crawlspace under a first-floor bathroom.

2. Eliminate Contamination

A broken supply line can saturate building materials and contents with clean, treated water. Quick drying is usually sufficient for this type of damage. Any materials exposed to Category Two gray water, which may contain chemicals or microbes, should be cleaned and disinfected.
This is also the case for Category Three black water, which is highly contaminated and may contain solid waste. Porous materials may need to be torn out and disposed of. Try to stop the spread of contaminated water from a leaking toilet.

3. Ventilate and Dry

Bathroom ventilation can maintain low moisture levels and prevent the growth of mildew or mold. You should also thoroughly dry a bathroom that has sustained water damage. Mitigation experts may recommend the use of air movers, fans or dehumidifiers.

These measures can minimize the severity of damage caused by a leaking toilet or almost any type of bathroom leak. After water damage occurs in the bathroom or any other part of your home, you should take immediate action to either promote drying or clean, disinfect and then dry the affected area.
Mold spreads quickly, so a minor mold infestation can quickly escalate into a major problem. We’re dedicated to responding immediately when you contact us.

Where To Look For Mold In Your Pompano Beach Home

9/15/2020 (Permalink)

Our team can quickly respond, inspect, assess, and get to work to make your mold infestation "Like it never even happened."

Water damage in your home or business can very quickly lead to mold. If you suspect mold in your home call the experts at SERVPRO of Pompano Beach (954) 970-4942. The technicians are trained and certified and bring the right equipment for the job.

If you're worried about mold growth in your Pompano Beach, FL home, then there are a few places you may want to check. While mold is preventable, it does enjoy areas of warmth and humidity. This means that if you suspect there may be growth in your home, knowing where the most likely habitat is may help you find and eradicate the problem quickly.

1. Basements

The basement can be a prime mold habitat, as it’s one place that can easily accumulate water. Water can leak in through cracks or window wells and puddle on the floor or soak into organic material. You may find mold on wood framing, floorboards, furniture, or carpeting in this area. Many experts recommend having a sump pump in a basement if you believe water accumulation may be a problem.

2. Bathrooms

The bathroom is another place where you may find mold growth. The nature of baths and showers make this room humid a large proportion of the time. There are also many crannies where spores can potentially settle. It's a good idea to run your fan any time you're also running hot water, as this can help reduce the level of humidity in the room.

3. Attics

The attic is another place where you may find spores. If a storm has damaged the roof, there may be places where water can seep in. You might see signs such as moldy drywall, peeling paint, damp insulation, or discoloration in the wood. If you believe you have storm damage or mold, it's best to contact a damage and remediation professional as soon as possible. A professional can also perform any necessary tests to confirm if mold does or does not exist in your home.

Knowing where to look for mold growth may help you find it so that you can take care of the problem quickly. Try looking in warm places with high humidity, such as a basement, a bathroom, or an attic. If you believe you may have mold in your home but can't see it Call SERVPRO of Pompano Beach (954) 970-4942.

SERVPRO of Pompano Beach is here to serve the community in Pompano Beach, Lighthouse Point, and Coconut Creek. Due to the irritants and allergens that mold produces, it has the possibility to cause health effects to you and the people around you.

If you think you might have a mold problem, our SERVPRO team is only one call away.

Get An Accurate Estimate After A Commercial Fire In Pompano

9/9/2020 (Permalink)

After experiencing a commercial fire in Lighthouse Point, or Pompano Beach, property managers may be eager to begin the process of cleanup and rebuilding.

In order to get an accurate estimate for repairs and restoration, it is essential to work with a restoration specialist who understands the job.

Don't settle for a bid that isn't specified to your individual needs. In order to get an accurate estimate, the restoration company should come out and take an in-person look at the damages done.

An over-the-phone generic quote will only be a ballpark guess and may result in inaccurate pricing and a higher final price than expected. Likewise, a contractor who only specializes in one aspect of your repair needs may have to hire additional subcontractors to complete work.

The cost of subcontracting may be difficult to predict up-front. Look for a restoration crew that can give you a guaranteed quote in all of the following areas. For an accurate estimate call SERVPRO of Pompano Beach (954) 970-4942 if you have fire damage.

Debris Cleanup

Following a commercial fire, your facility is likely to be covered in ashes, soot and other debris. Cleanup and complete debris removal is essential to restoring a safe and functional space. Removing debris is the first step in fire damage cleanup for the following reasons:

Prevention of a permeating smoke smell

Removal of dangerous rubble

Inventory of salvageable items

Calculation of total loss items

Odor Removal

If your workplace is ever going to be returned to its former state, air quality must be breathable and smoke-free. Smoke from a fire has a way of quickly permeating its surroundings. Even after a small fire, the smell of smoke may continue to linger. When considering an estimate for commercial restoration, be sure odor removal is included in the price.

Our SERVPRO of Pompano Beach team understands the stress and confusion that goes hand in hand with a loss of any kind.

Reconstruction

Finally, a proper bid should go-over the cost of reconstructing your facility to the way it was before the fire took place. Professional fire restoration companies should never shy away from working with your commercial insurance agent. Be sure to get a pricing guarantee that includes each of the areas mentioned above. Doing so will ensure the most accurate estimate.

Our team are fire and water damage restoration specialist and have the experience, expertise, and equipment to make your loss seem "Like it never even happened." Our technicians will take care of your family and property from start to finish!

Water Damage In Your Pompano Beach Business

9/3/2020 (Permalink)

The humid climate and seasonal storms of Pompano Beach increase the risk of moisture damage in all commercial businesses.

Aging plumbing and operator error or mechanical malfunction may cause damage to these properties as well. When damaging water jeopardizes your business and requires removal, we have all the resources to make it happen.

SERVPRO of Pompano Beach crews have experience in managing water removal from commercial buildings and each member of the crew has IICRC certification in the theory, planning, and delivery of water removal services. One crucial skill we offer that ensures a successful outcome is structural and content moisture measurement. Our technicians train until they are experts in determining how much moisture remains in building. They calculate drying targets and monitor the moisture levels until their efforts meet the target.

Standing water responds well to pumps and vacuum extractors. The residual moisture needs weighted extractor wands, air movers, desiccant humidifiers, and sometimes the addition of heat to move moisture out of carpeting, woodwork, and subflooring and into the air where it can be condensed and discarded. The HVAC system also needs checking, and if unaffected by the flood, be brought back online to help balance the ambient humidity in the building.

SERVPRO technicians inspect for any indication of microbial activity as the priceless books, artwork, and documents housed in the center’s rooms are sensitive to any rise in the humidity which could cause mold damage even in non-saturated materials.

SERVPRO of Pompano Beach has advanced equipment and highly trained technicians to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Let the experts manage water removal for your business. SERVPRO of Pompano Beach has staffed phones at (954) 970-4942 round the clock.

How Do I Know If I Have Mildew or Mold In My Pompano Beach Home?

9/3/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Pompano Beach is here to serve the community in Pompano Beach, Lighthouse Point, and Coconut Creek.

Is It Mold Or Mildew?

Mold and mildew are both types of fungi and are similar in many ways. Mildew is a surface fungi that can easily be identified as a patch of gray or even white fungus that is lying on the surface of a moist area.

Mold tends to have a higher profile and can even become fuzzy, while mildew is always flat. They both are often found inside homes, thrive in moist environments, spread from surface to surface easily, and may cause problems with your health and your home.

If mold or mildew is proving to be a problem in your bathroom call the professionals SERVPRO of Pompano Beach (954) 970-4942. Mildew thrives in damp and stagnant conditions. In addition to a regular mildew clean routine, a bathroom may require a few upgrades.

Ventilation

Bathroom mold tends to grow in rooms with poor ventilation. Moisture may linger long after water spills out of sinks or shower facilities. An exhaust fan can promote airflow for faster drying. Select a fan based on the size of the bathroom:

A small bathroom should have a fan rated at least 50 cubic feet per minute
Add 50 more CFM for every toilet or shower
Very large bathroom facilities may have fans up to 500 CFM
Increasing airflow can reduce moisture levels in a bathroom. Proper ventilation is crucial for preventing mildew and mold.

Moisture Reduction

Take measures to limit the amount of moisture left standing in bathrooms. Consider installing splash guards on sinks or shower enclosures. If showers have curtains, make sure that liners hang inside enclosures. Use grout to prevent leaks, including leaks behind tiles where mold may form.

Cleaning

A mildew clean routine should target places where fungus tends to grow. Be sure to scrub and wipe down the following areas on a regular basis:

Corners
Grout
Under sinks

Bathrooms should be cleaned and disinfected on a regular basis.

These measures can help stop mildew growth in bathrooms. If a musty odor persists, mildew or bathroom mold may be hidden. If you suspect mold in your Pompano Beach home Call SERVPRO of Pompano Beach today (954) 970-4942.

Stormy Afternoons Can Lead To Mold In Your Business or Home

8/12/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage from a storm can lead to mold in your Pompano Beach home or business. Call Us Today if you have damage or suspect mold (954) 970-4942

If You Think You Might Have Mold In Pompano Beach, Lighthouse Point, or Coconut Creek Read Below

When storms roll through Pompano Beach mold is probably not the first thing on your mind. You are concerned with protecting your home and business. Considering how quickly mold can grow you should be thinking about mold if you have water damage from a storm.

Understanding how mold growth happens is a vital part of managing your property well. Here are a few facts that every building owner needs to understand about the dreaded fungus. It's also vital to understand why SERVPRO of Pompano Beach is an important call after the storm if you have damage.

1. You cannot remove all mold from your building. Mold spores travel inside every time the door opens. It attaches to shoes, clothes, bags and hair. It doesn't necessarily become a problem until it starts to form patches.

2. You may smell mold before you can see it. When mold begins to collect on surfaces, it gives off a musty odor. Even if it's hidden under carpet or in air ducts, you may know it's there because of the smell.

3. Mold needs moisture to thrive. Mold growth can happen anywhere there is excess moisture in your building. Spores from the air land and start to form fuzzy patches.

4. Humidity can trigger a mold problem. Even moisture in the air can lead to a mold problem. The indoor humidity should stay below 50% at all times in order to deter growth. Keep high humidity at bay by using dehumidifiers and keeping your building well ventilated.

5. Mold can start growing on damp materials in as little as a day. Water damage specialists respond quickly to calls for repair because they know that even the smallest delay could lead to secondary damage such as mold. The faster they repair the damage caused by flooding, the less likely a mold problem is to develop.

Good management of your commercial property entails knowing all the problems that could befall it. Knowing how to recognize and even prevent mold damage can help you keep your building in good shape and help you train employees or tenants on how to assist in the preventative maintenance process.

Leaks in Pompano Beach Bathrooms

Recognizing that you have a shower or bathtub leak is one thing, but understanding the exact source and how to repair it may be a challenge. Here is a cheat sheet to help you with some tips and tricks to pinpoint your leak in Pompano Beach, FL.

3 Kinds of Shower Leaks

You may have noticed your bathtub leak by seeing wet floorboards or a stained ceiling directly under the bathroom. A combination of simple tests and inspection can help determine what kind of leak you have.

Tiles

Clues that your tiles are leaking include noticeable grout problems, like crumbling, broken pieces and mold growth.

Splash

Your shower door may need some maintenance. Look for clues like water on the floor, or soaked walls and baseboards just outside the shower area. Test for this by splashing the shower door with some water and watch to see if it flows outside the door.

Drain

A shower pan leak or bathtub drain leak will probably cause a lot more damage than a splash leak. You may notice a wet ceiling in the room or crawlspace below. You can test for a drain pan leak by getting a reliable test plug from the hardware store. Plug the drain and fill the basin with water. Note the water level and check it after an hour to see if there has been any water loss. If there has, then you probably have a crack in the seal around your drain or in the drain pan.

Avoiding Mold

Now you know how to identify the source of a shower or bathtub leak. Hopefully, it’s simple to resolve, like replacing a shower door or fresh caulk. If the leak has existed for a while and you have a water damaged ceiling, floor or baseboards, then contact SERVPRO of Pompano Beach (954) 970-4942 to make sure the repairs are done properly and mold is cleaned correctly.

Pompano Beach Storm Damage

7/29/2020 (Permalink)

Living in Pompano Beach, we face the seasonal threat of storm damage. For most Floridians storm preparedness comes easy but if you've recently moved here, it can become overwhelming.

With a good understanding of hurricane and storm preparedness, you and your family can be sure to better protect your home from the next storm. To be better prepared for a storm you should be prepared for both before and after the storm.

Before a storm hits, it's important to have your emergency supplies stocked and ready to use. There's no better way to have an emergency supply kit done than doing it a little bit at a time. Starting new every year in January will give you plenty of time to be prepared for hurricane season in June. It's also a good idea to have a "go bag" ready so that if you need to leave on a short notice you're not scrambling around finding your clothes and essentials.

Consider investing in impact-resistant windows and glass for your home, that way you won't need to worry about putting up shutters before a storm hits. At the same time, getting a storm bar for your garage door will help reinforce it's structure. During a storm, a garage door is usually the first structural element to fail.

Keep your landscaping maintained throughout the year by removing dead trees and plants and trimming trees and plants that have been overgrown. Waiting until hurricane season to get your landscaping maintained will cost you more money and may not be able to get done before a storm hits if it's put off too long.

Make sure that your home's rain gutters are secured and cleared to prevent water damage.

Just as it's important to prepare before a storm, being prepared after is equally important. If you evacuate only go home after the storm has hit and when local authorities have declared it safe. Returning too early can turn deadly if you run into flooded roadways and falling trees.

Report any downed power lines and avoid walking through any flooded walkways or roadways.

If your roof has suffered damages, use tarps to cover it from more water coming in. If your home has broken windows, use plywood to prevent additional water damage.

One last step to better prepare for after the storm is to take a picture of all damages to better assist when making insurance claims.

If you do have storm damage call the trained restoration experts at SERVPRO of Pompano Beach (954) 970-4942.

Mold in Pompano Beach Businesses

The key to keeping your business safe is having professionally trained technicians inspect your business. Moisture can be locked into wood floors, carpets, bathrooms, kitchens, and literally anywhere around your commercial site.Simply cleaning the mold with bleach or any other disinfectant won't do the job, the mold will only be hidden and not completely eliminated from the environment. Sometimes remediation and reconstruction may be necessary to get rid of the mold altogether.
Not only can mold cause health effects to you and other people on your property, but your business can also experience severe interruptions during the remediation and cleanup process.
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
Your property’s appearance speaks volumes to your clients. When it’s impacted by fire or water damage, you need professional help. Every hour spent restoring your business is lost revenue and productivity. If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

The electrical system

Look for damaged wiring, make sure your circuit breakers are in good condition, and be careful of signs of corrosion on any electrical elements.

Gas/propane system

Check vent stacks on gas powered water heaters, furnaces, and clothes dryers. Check pilot lights for dust buildup or improper installation

Air conditioning/heating systems

Clean/have your interior AC coils cleaned, and replace your air filters regularly. This keeps your system from working too hard and will also save you money on your energy bill.

If Storms Are Really Shaking Your Pompano Beach Home- It Could Be Time For A Roof Inspection

6/30/2020 (Permalink)

Catastrophic winds and flying debris have been known to take a toll on roofs all over the Eastern Seaboard and Gulf Coast.

Home and property owners should always be arranging for post-storm inspections whenever a storm passes by. This ensures that professionals can provide any necessary repairs before the difficulties of seasonal changes begin.
Inside: If you have an attic and can get to it, start there during daylight.

If you see any sunlight peeking through holes in the plywood, that's a good indicator of roof damage, which in turn could already have water accumulated.

If you can't find any visible holes use a flashlight to find any dark stains or sagging, this could also mean moisture is present and in turn need attention.

Outside: By walking around the perimeter of your house you should be able to see most of your roof and inspect for the following problems that can cause water damage:

Shingles that are missing

Any deformed shingles that are cracked, bent, etc.

Dark patches of shingles. These shingles could dry out over time and lead to water leaks.
Debris. Something as simple as a tree branch can cause damage over time if not removed right away. It could also be hiding a hole in your roof.

If you find damage, contact SERVPRO of Pompano Beach at (954) 970-4942 to help with water damage.

Fire Prevention Tips For Your Pompano Beach Home

If You questions about water, fire or mold damage give us a call, SERVPRO of Pompano Beach (954) 970-4942.

Pompano Beach Dryer Tips

According to the National Fire Protection Association, fires in the laundry room average a total of 15,000 fires per year in the United States. This means that every day 42 families go through the scary event of a laundry room fire. Each year it's estimated that these fires cause approximately $201 million dollars in structure damage. Ranging from small scale fires to large and deadly, laundry room fires pose a threat when it comes to fire safety in your home.

Considering what goes in any given laundry room: water, heat, electricity and flammable items, it's easy to see how fast a fire can happen if the right precautions aren't taken.

It is important to get rid of any lint as soon as possible. Making sure that your laundry room is clear of lint build up lessens the chance of combustible material catching on fire. Don't forget to clean the dryer and washer vent after each use.

Be sure that you have the proper rigid metal or plastic dryer hose vent and outdoor vent. Checking them regularly is also advised.
A final important tip is to never dry clothes that have been exposed to paint, gas, pesticides, cleaning chemicals, or oil in the dryer. The safest way to dry these items is to air dry them.
Our SERVPRO of Pompano Beach team understands the stress and confusion that goes hand in hand with a loss of any kind.

Get A Better Understanding About Mold In Your Pompano Beach Home

If You Think You Might Have Mold Call The SERVPRO Professionals Today

If you’ve ever ignored your leftovers for long enough, it is likely that you have opened up a container to some moldy food. Maybe you’ve found a bit of bread mold when you wanted to make a sandwich. In fact, there are a few reasons why you might find your food looking a bit fuzzy.
1. Mold is Everywhere
It might be a bit unnerving to hear that there is likely plenty of mold in your Pompano Beach, FL home that you can’t see. In most cases, you don’t need to worry. Most mold is not harmful and will cause no problems for you or your home. It does mean, however, that you might find some fridge mold growing on occasion.
2. It Helps Feed the Mold
Because fungi cannot create energy from the sun like other plants, it needs to feed on other sources. Sometimes, that source is your food. Particularly in the case of bread mold, and much to your dismay, this food can be a great place for the unwanted fungus to get its nutrients. Because you often keep bread in a dark warm area like a breadbox or cupboard, it is also easy for the mold to grow quickly.
3. There is Moisture
Mold grows more easily in places where there is moisture, which makes your leftovers the perfect breeding ground. It can spread quickly in this kind of environment, so you might find fungus growth on a dish that looked perfectly fine just the night before.
While bread mold and other types of mold on your food does not necessarily indicate a problem in your home, it can be a good idea to have a mold remediation service examine your home for mold if you are concerned.
If you suspect or have discovered a potential mold infestation in your home or business, call SERVPRO of Pompano Beach.
In as little as 48 hours, a minor mold issue can quickly spread through a home or business. Once you contact us, we’re dedicated to starting the remediation process quickly. Every mold infestation is different, from the amount of mold to the types of materials affected.

Water Damage Can Lead To Mold If You Don't Act Quickly

5/17/2020 (Permalink)

Acting Quickly After Water Damage Is The Key To Avoiding Mold

When water damage has hit your Pompano Beach home you'll want to act quickly to avoid mold. Choosing a trained, certified, restoration company is important. In Pompano Beach your choice would be SERVPRO of Pompano Beach.
You will want to take the first step toward filing your insurance claim by calling your insurance company, and you now are awaiting the first visit from your home adjuster to officially assess any damage. Below are important tips to help you prepare and ensure the visit is as advantageous and stress-free as possible. Also remember for a stress free claims process, SERVPRO can help manage the insurance paperwork and process.  Document any damage to structures, which can include your home, garage, shed, and pool. Before the insurance adjuster arrives, identify and make a list of any damage to your roof, foundation, walls, electrical lines or other structural elements. Include photos and videos of damage like cracks, tears or holes, and if possible, have “before” pictures on hand as well.  Compile lists and records of damaged items. In addition to documenting any structural damage, make lists of damaged items within and around the home. If possible, gather receipts, purchase records, and examples of current sales prices for the same items. Include photos of the damage, gather any previous pictures you may have taken of the items, and be sure to not throw out anything until after the adjuster’s visit.  While the aftermath of a home disaster can certainly be difficult and unchartered territory, taking the time up front to gather records and estimates can make your visit with your home adjuster a productive one. A successful visit will make filing your insurance claim that much easier and help pave the way to your ultimate goal of quality, fast and affordable repair and restoration services.

Storms In Pompano Beach Can Leave Your Home A Mess

4/29/2020 (Permalink)

It’s annoying, and can be quite costly to find a leak when a storm hits Pompano Beach. Being one of the leading causes for water damage, storm leaks are a headache for any homeowner to deal with. But no need to worry, the professionals at SERVPRO have gathered a few helpful tips.

There could be a number of different reasons as to why your home is leaking. If it’s brick, concrete, or wood framed, there is a main rooted source to the storm leak. Did you know that water damage is the second highest insurance claim that is filed in North America?

Water can lead to some unexpected costs if not handled properly especially since rain related water intrusions are not covered by insurance. Getting the leak fixed as soon as possible is extremely important to saving money in repairs.
One main reason why rain leaks occur is due to brick cracking. If your home is made primarily of brick, or has brick in its composition, rain leaks are still possible. Weather conditions, time and erosion all cause brick and all stonework to eventually develop cracks. These cracks need to be repaired by a skilled tradesperson.

As soon as you find a leak in your home, calling the professionals at SERVPRO of Pompano Beach is the first step to cleaning up the damage already done.

Another reason for rain leaks is a problem with your roof. This one may seem obvious, but if you can’t clearly see it you may easily dismiss it. A hole or imperfection or even a piece of debris on your roof can cause rain leaks.

We recommend calling a professional roofer to climb up on your roof and check it out, but there could be a hole in your roof that is being covered by a piece of debris. On the other hand, there may be a piece of debris, which could make a hole or vulnerable spot on your roof as it rubs against the surface.

Now that you have a better understanding of how a rain leak can occur in your home and what to do, you can rest assured that SERVPRO of Pompano Beach can be there as soon as the same day for any water damage disaster.

SERVPRO of Pompano Beach is excited to serve the community here in Pompano Beach, Lighthouse Point, and Coconut Creek.  Our team is well-seasoned and work well together.  Because we are IICRC-certified, it gives our customers peace of mind and confidence that we will not only get the job done, but we will get the job done right.

Is Your Pompano Beach Home Prepared?

4/15/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO® has over 50 years in the cleaning and restoration business and we follow strict guidelines.

Predictions regarding hurricane season have begun to surface. Hurricane season is one of those important issues that should talk about with your family.

Some of the things you should talk about with your family concerning a potential threat of a hurricane is:

Escape Routes –

If a storm comes, or even a fire, find a location to meet up in an emergency. Make sure each family member knows where that location is.

Evacuation Plan –

One reason my family loves South Florida is the fact that hurricanes can be tracked and prepared for in advance. There are usually a few days to decide whether we should evacuate or ride it out. Other states are not as fortunate such as the states in tornado alley or states where earthquakes are prevalent. It’s important to maintain a full tank of gas should you need to leave at a moment’s notice. Most gas stations are closed the closer the storm gets.

Maintaining Contact –

Because families don’t always stay together during a hurricane, make sure that you have a plan in place to stay in contact with one another.

Utility Shut-offs –

SERVPRO® of Pompano Beach offers a service to our customers called the Emergency READY Profile (ERP). While this is customarily provided to commercial buildings, the ERP is a great tool to have even for your home. It is a good all-in-one resource to keep all emergency and utility information in one place. Sometimes we are instructed to shut off our utilities to prevent additional dangers. Knowing where these shut-offs are located on your property is important when time is of the essence.

Our team at SERVPRO® of Pompano Beach offers this service free of charge AND there is an app so that all this same information is at your fingertips on your smart phone or tablet.

Insurance and other important documents –
My family keeps all our important information in one, secured, water-proof box we call the strong box. It contains all insurance information, passports, titles to property we own and anything else we would want to grab quickly should we need to evacuate. You can also store these same documents in a safety deposit box outside of the home. The great thing about an ERP is that most people keep their phones on them. If for some reason you can’t grab your strong box, you can access your information on the app or even on any computer with internet access. It’s another level of preparedness for you and your family.
You’re also going to want to review your policies and the extent of the coverage they provide to make sure you’re covered.

Flood Insurance –

South Florida is flat. We are located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Everglades. Both bodies of water cause flooding so even those that aren’t in a flood zone have the risk of being affected by a storm surge or heavy rain. Purchasing flood insurance gives you a little extra peace of mind and will assist you in the recovery process.
Have a Reliable Restoration Company –
When storms come, so do fly-by-night companies. The intention is to take advantage of victims at weak moments to gain a quick buck. It’s so important to make sure that you have someone you can trust. SERVPRO® of Pompano Beach is a nationally branded company that reports to our corporate office on a regular basis.

SERVPRO® has over 50 years in the cleaning and restoration business and we follow strict guidelines to ensure that we take care of your home after a disaster strikes.

Money –

My mother is very frugal. She knows how to keep money on reserve for emergencies and it has always come in handy when we needed it. Having a stash set aside for emergencies is very important. Keep some at home in a safe place that you can grab quickly as you may not be able to access a bank for several days or even weeks depending on the extent of the damage. You’ll also want to have a savings account dedicated to emergencies.

Special Needs –

For the elderly and those with special needs, make sure that you take the extra precautions needed to assist them in a time of crisis. Autistic children, for example, are dependent on routine so it’s important to try to keep them calm and as close to their routine as possible yet safe.

Pets –

If a storm comes, don’t leave your pet. Either take them with you or find a shelter that can provide for them while you’re gone. Pets cannot take care of themselves. If you leave them behind, they either will not survive or they may be hard to locate after a storm.

Call SERVPRO® of Pompano Beach (954) 970-4942 to schedule a time to create your Emergency READY Profile and get you well on your way for this hurricane season.

SERVPRO of Pompano Beach is here to help. Call us 24/7 at (954) 970-4942

A few years ago Hurricane Irma was a category five hurricane that was on track to be one of the costliest hurricanes in United States history. The destruction would have rivaled Hurricane Katrina in potential economic damage. Millions of Floridians were affected, with some having lost everything in the storm. In the aftermath of such disasters, SERVPRO of Pompano Beach is always ready to provide water removal services. While some systems would normally strain under such a heavy workload, our national resources allow us to acquire extra equipment and even personnel in the aftermath of such disasters.

Below are a few ways we can help after a Hurricane.

Water Removal

Many homes can remain flooded in Pompano Beach and require water removal. Even if standing water has gone away, water remains soaked into materials and foundations across most of the community, creating grave and immediate structural and mold problems for those left without care. Our wide array of water extraction and removal devices allow us to handle a broad spectrum of moisture problems and fully clear your home of water in a timely fashion.

Water Restoration

Even if your home has fully dried out, it will likely still bear the marks of flood damage. Stains, debris, and warped materials can plague many local homes, presenting simple but significant obstacles for homeowners looking to return to normalcy. SERVPRO specializes in water damage restoration, and we can help to eliminate any lasting damage, no matter how severe it may seem.

Mold Checks and Remediation

Hurricanes invariably lead to the explosive growth of one particularly troublesome household organism: mold. Mold can begin to grow with any amount of water added to the home but is especially likely after flooding. Our technicians and inspectors are always careful to monitor for and deal with mold colonies should they begin to grow.

SERVPRO of Pompano Beach is here to help. Call us 24/7 at (954) 970-4942 for emergency services or questions about our work.

Don't Let Water Damage In Your Pompano Beach Home Turn Into A Moldy Mess

3/7/2020 (Permalink)

For a quick, professional, water removal service, contact SERVPRO of Pompano Beach (954) 970-4942

Damage from water can occur from different sources throughout your Pompano Beach home. Your kitchen can develop a leak in a water hose leading from a dishwasher or a kitchen pipe under the sink. Your washing machine can overflow, etc. Many people believe that the water caused by these instances is clean, but the EPA reports that “clean water” can carry unhealthy bacteria. Other causes of damage can also be caused by a leaking room, bad weather, or cracks within the foundation.
Water damage is classified into four different classes for proper treatment. If you experience water damage in your Pompano Beach home, restoration experts can determine what is needed in the clean-up efforts. The classification of water damage is based on the effects of the water, the rate of evaporation, and how much moisture is absorbed by the materials in the area. All four classifications involve the following information:

• Class One is the least harmful. This damage affects only part of a room, with materials that include particle board, plywood, structural wood, vinyl composition tile, and concrete.

• Class Two has a fast rate of evaporation. This faster rate means that carpets and cushions are damaged. The seepage of water up a wall is less than 24 inches, and moisture is held within structural materials.

• Class Three has the fastest rate of evaporation. Damage may come from faulty sprinklers or other ceiling sources that can soak the walls, furniture, carpets, ceilings and the subfloor. A wide-spread water event.

• Class Four requires special water restoration and removal treatment. This classification affects flooring, plaster, stone, brick, crawlspaces, and concrete.

SERVPRO of Pompano Beach is an industry leading, water remediation service. For the safety of everyone in the home, it is important to distinguish which category of water damage you have. Restoration experts from SERVPRO of Pompano Beach offer removal services such as sewage clean-up, structure drying, water mitigation, contents inventory and cleaning. Knowing Who To Call In Pompano Beach When You're Not In Hot Water

3/7/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Pompano Beach (954) 970-4942 We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

South Florida is known for its tropical breezes and its warm sunny beaches. Did you know that many homes and condos in Pompano Beach, Palm Aire, Lighthouse Point, and Coconut Creek have water heaters that are over 30 years old?

While water heaters give us the convenience of having instant hot water to supply our showers, dishwashers, washers and sinks, they can also pose a potentially expensive water loss that creates a lot of damage.  This damage can happen not only to your own Pompano Beach home, but in the event that you live in an apartment or condo on the second floor or higher, you can also create damage to the home owner or tenant that lives below you.

Water heaters built 30 years ago were built to last, but not forever.  If you have a water heater that is over 30 years old, it would be in your best interest to hire a licensed plumber to remove and replace that water heater.

But what if you already have a water heater water loss in your house or condo?

That’s where SERVPRO of Pompano Beach (954) 970-4942 comes in.  We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year to help you in your time of need.

With our team of experts, SERVPRO has over 50 years of collective experience to make your home “Like it never even happened.”

What Steps Should You Take?

Before anything else, call your home owner’s insurance company.  They will be able to walk you through getting a claim started and let you know if you are covered for the damages.

You’ll want to get the water heater replaced right away or at least have the leak stopped so that mitigation can begin.  Standing water can begin to wick into your drywall immediately so to try to salvage as much as possible, you’ll want to fix that leak right away.

Call a water mitigation specialist.  What makes SERVPRO a trusted brand?  Knowledge by itself is great, but knowledge plus experience is wisdom.  That’s what makes SERVPRO of Pompano Beach a cut above the rest.  Our tried and true systematic water mitigation practices give us an edge to bring life back to normal for you in a timely and professional manner.

The Do's and Dont's of Mold Remediation

3/7/2020 (Permalink)

Confusion and misunderstanding surround the topic of mold and mold remediation. Call the experts at SERVPRO of Pompano Beach (954) 970-4942

Mold lives and grows everywhere. It’s something we encounter every day without even being aware of it.

So, what makes mold a problem?

When there is moisture inside your home, usually caused by a leak, mold can grow quite quickly even if you don’t see visible signs of it. It’s so important to hire an experienced mold remediation specialist at the first thought of mold presence to get rid of the problem right away before it spreads. Once mold begins to spread, it can affect every area of your home or business and may cause health effects to you, your family, your pets and your staff.

SERVPRO of Pompano Beach specializes in water mitigation and mold remediation. It’s the cornerstone of our company. We know how to thoroughly and effectively remediate your mold to acceptable levels (it's impossible to get rid of mold completely because it exists everywhere and can come in whenever you open the door or window).

Dos and Don’ts

DO – Get a mold assessment. SERVPRO of Pompano Beach is ready to help (954) 970-4942. Our team can quickly respond, inspect, assess, and get to work to make your mold infestation "Like it never even happened." Our crew has the training, experience, and equipment to make sure that your mold problem is handled properly. Even if you see visible signs of mold growth, a mold assessment tests for mold that you can’t see and can tell you what kind of mold is present and in what quantities. Not every mold spore is the same.  Some are more dangerous than others. There may be mold in the air, in your air vents, in clothing, etc. SERVPRO of Pompano Beach can determine how far that mold reaches inside of your property, so we can accurately reduce all the mold and prevent it from coming back.

DON’T – Spray bleach on it and walk away. We have heard so many stories over the years of people spraying all sorts of things from bleach to disinfectant spray, etc. to try to get rid of the mold themselves. Mold has roots like a tree. Killing surface mold does not kill the mold inside your wall. It lightens up and you can smell that bleachy smell and think that you’ve gotten it. But let a few weeks pass and you’re right back at square one.

Our SERVPRO of Pompano Beach team of experts have been trained in the proper procedures of how to effectively reduce all the mold and keep it from returning. Call us. That’s what we’re here for.

DO – Have someone house sit for you while you’re away. Even if you don’t have pets, hurricane season here in South Florida is notorious for wreaking havoc on your homes and businesses even if there isn’t obvious damage. It doesn’t hurt to have someone check in on your home from time to time. There’s nothing worse than to be a seasonal resident coming down for the holidays only to find black spots on everything in your home! Staying on top of things is the best way to keep mold away from your home and your belongings.

DON’T – Call a fly-by-night mold remediation company. SERVPRO has been in the mold remediation business for over 50 years. Our reputation for being one of the best in the business has given us a name you can count on in your time of trouble.

Cleaner Carpets In Pompano Beach

3/7/2020 (Permalink)

While it appears that the trend in the home improvement industry is towards hard wood flooring or tile, there are some die-hard carpet lovers that still enjoy taking off their shoes and feeling the soft cushiony feel of a plush carpet under their feet.

Carpet cleaning has evolved over the years and we want our Pompano Beach customers to know that we offer the most current, proficient means of cleaning your carpet to keep it in as close to new condition as possible.

Hot Water Extraction

What many of our customers refer to as steam cleaning is actually a more thorough process called hot water extraction. Steam cleaning generally is much milder and is a good option for expectant mothers and infants or even the elderly and those that have sensitive immune systems or allergies. This process is chemical-free and uses steam to clean carpets and fabrics to remove debris and other soils. The drawback to steam is that it can damage man-made carpet fibers and change certain characteristics in the carpet that are set by heat upon manufacturing.

Hot water extraction – on the other hand – begins with a pre-conditioning treatment that is then agitated using a brush or machine that scrubs the carpet fibers to begin to draw out soil from beneath the surface of the carpet. The next step is to spray heated water and detergent into the carpet to deep clean and then draw out that water with a high-powered water extractor. This step is by far the most important because leaving extensive water inside the carpet can cause more damage than good over time. Mold and browning (on wool) can occur if proper drying techniques are not performed.

The technicians at SERVPRO of Pompano Beach use certified drying equipment such as air movers (fans) and dehumidifiers to effectively and completely remove any remaining traces of moisture that could damage your carpet.

Carpet cleaning by SERVPRO of Pompano Beach, just a call away (954) 970-4942, will ensure that your carpet stays plush and beautiful so that you can enjoy it for years to come.

As a company, SERVPRO of Pompano Beach understands precisely that, and our team takes the shortest time possible to arrive at the site since an immediate response is crucial to an efficient restoration process. We work hard to mitigate water damages.

There are two ways through which water can damage your content. The first one takes place when materials absorb the water via direct contact. The second way is when they absorb the excess moisture from the air. Either way, our SERVPRO technicians must create appropriate conditions that promote drying. While we can use pumps to extract a substantial amount of water, there are situations where we use detection equipment to measure the moisture level in carpets, walls, and other areas. Moisture meters, moisture sensors, and thermo-hygrometers are some of the equipment that our IICRC certified water damage restoration crew members can use.

The application of dehumidifiers and air movers is part of the procedures that our SERVPRO technicians employ to enhance evaporation. While air movers promote evaporation of moisture from surfaces to the air, dehumidifiers remove the additional moisture from the air thereby lowering the humidity.

Direct contact with water might cause some contents to rot and lead to the release of odors. It is the job of our technicians to identify and remove the sources of the odors. Usually, the odors might have penetrated into tiny spaces and removing the source might not be enough for complete elimination. That is where we introduce deodorization – we use thermal foggers or ULV foggers to spray the deodorants. Our odor control technicians can make the right call.

SERVPRO of Pompano Beach has a proven record in fire, storm, water and mold restoration. Contact us at (954)-970-4942 and be served by an industry leader.

Pumping Water From Your Basement

2/11/2020 (Permalink)

A basement flood that covers a large area requires a submersible pump

Dealing with water damage in your home in Pompano Beach, FL  can be a traumatic experience. A basement flood can be especially difficult to deal with. Since basements are underground, you need to wait until the outside water source has subsided before removing the water.

Water Damage Repair

If the water is an inch or less deep and is only in a small area of the basement, it’s possible that you may be able to use a wet/dry vacuum to take care of the problem. Since the typical tank is only 4 or 5 gallons, it would be too much work to continually empty the tank in a large area.
A basement flood that covers a large area requires a submersible pump. This pump sits inside a waterproof covering and has a fitting that can be connected to a sump hose. A generator and extension cord are required to run the pump.

How to Set Up the Pump

Fasten extension cord to the cord on the pump before taking it to the basement.
Make sure no water can reach the connection by securing it. This can be done by looping cords around a ceiling attachment so that it can’t get wet.
Connect the sump hose to pump fitting and secure a nylon rope to the pump’s top area.
Direct the hose end so that the water will be able to drain into a storm sewer or gutter.

How to Pump the Water Out

Using a rope, carefully move the pump to the basement.
Start the generator by plugging the extension cord into it.
You can move the pump to different flooded areas to ensure that all water is removed.

Drying the Area

Carpeting and drywall should be replaced so that mold doesn’t have a chance to grow. A dehumidifier is a good idea to help dry the area quicker.
For any basement flood, It’s important to contact your insurance agent as soon as possible to check on your insurance coverage.

Water Damage In Pompano Beach Isn't New, But Some of The Looming Problems Might Surprise You

2/5/2020 (Permalink)

Our technicians are trained and certified. he Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) certifies and sets the standards for the cleaning and restoration industries.

When we get your call we will respond as quickly as possible to make sure the process isn't complicated and completed as quickly as possible. Initiating the Restorative Drying process saves you money, and prevents microbes from multiplying due to the water damage.

As part of the first step in the restorative drying process, we come out to your home or office and complete an inspection. Inspections are an important part of the Restorative Drying process because they help give you, the customer, reassurance of the need for Restorative Drying.

Among other water damage issues we want to address mold. SERVPRO of Pompano technicians will inspect, assess, and get to work to make your mold infestation "Like it never even happened."

Not addressing water damage as soon as it's noticed can cause a number of problems to occur, such as delamination, furniture stains, and mold or mildew. Our experiences with water damage include condo water leaks, post hurricane water damage, and even flooded hotel hallways due to sewage breakage.

As scary as water damage can be, prevention doesn't have to be and can be as easy as keeping an eye on your water bill. If your water bill is slowly rising in price or if there is a spike on your bill, there may be a water leak somewhere. Another tip to for water damage prevention is to use a "drain snake" versus a chemical based unclogging product.

Clogs are a part of everyday life that even regular cleaning cannot entirely prevent. Using a harsh caustic cleaner can damage your pipes overtime, turning one prevention into one big water damage. Owning a drain snake is a cheap and efficient way to unclog a pipe without causing any damage in the long run. Not only are drain snakes cost effective, they can also be found locally at hardware stores.

If water damage occurs it's a good idea to call a professional company, with expert technicians, SERVPRO of Pompano Beach (954) 970-4942.

What To Do If You Suspect Mold In Your Pompano Beach Home

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

There are a lot of ways that water can damage your home. If you live in Pompano Beach, you should be aware of water damage and mold. Sometimes it's as obvious as a visible pipe leaking water on to your kitchen floor. More often than not however, the source of water damage is hidden and so are the effects.

Here are some helpful tips to spot water damage:
Stains on the wall or ceiling

Discoloration in drywall is a sign that there is previous or ongoing water damage. The stains may be yellow, brown, or faint outlines.

A musky smell

A musky smell may indicate the presence of mold due to water damage. Mold-especially in the humidity of South Florida- does not take long to grow in the right conditions

Warping in the floor or baseboard

When certain materials like wood soak up water, they buckle and warp. If there is visible warping or buckling of floors, there may be water underneath.

Tips for Avoiding and Handling Mold Buildup in Your Facility

Dirty or wet carpets can lead to mold problems

Tips for Avoiding and Handling Mold Buildup in Your Facility

Carpet cleaning is an important part of building maintenance. That’s because dirty or wet carpets can lead to mold problems.
Mold is a fungus that reproduces via microscopic spores. These mold spores constantly travel through the air both indoors and outdoors. The fungus can actually grow on any organic substance, including:

  • Food
  • Paper
  • Wood
  • Insulation
  • Carpet

Once the mold starts growing, it will destroy the organic materials and use them as food. If left untreated, this could cause severe mold damage to a building.

Preventing Mold Buildup

Since mold cleanup can be a difficult process, you should try to limit growth of the fungus within your facility. The best way to do this is to practice moisture control. Fix any leaks and remove wet spots or condensation as soon as possible. You should also perform scheduled inspections of the building.
To prevent the spread of water throughout your facility, keep mats by the door so employees and guests can wipe their feet. Air duct scrubbing and carpet cleaning should be done regularly to prevent the buildup of dust that can lead to mold.

Cleaning Mold

If you suspect that your Coconut Creek, FL, building has mold damage, you should first try to assess the severity of the issue. You may be able to clean a small area of mold by yourself. Be sure to wear protective gear and disposable clothing.
You should also check to see if there is any water damage associated with the mold growth. This water should be removed right away, and any wet items should be dried thoroughly.
For larger problems, however, you should contact mold remediation professionals. They will know how to use the latest technology to restore your belongings. Many experts will even use a High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) vacuum to ensure the black mold cleanup is complete.
With regular carpet cleaning and property maintenance, you can reduce mold growth in your facility. Any visible mold spores should be addressed immediately before the issue gets worse.

Qualities of a Good Fire Restoration Company

12/29/2019 (Permalink)

Look for a company that has the expertise and professionalism needed to get the job done quickly

Fire can cause a lot of damage to your commercial building in a short amount of time. When flames ravage your property in Kendall, FL, you need fire damage restoration specialists who can respond quickly, expertly and completely.

Fast Response

From the moment the emergency personnel are finished putting out the fire, the clock starts ticking on the damage to your building. The longer the damage is allowed to remain in your building, the more problems you may add to the overall issue:

  • Extra water damage to walls, floors and ceilings
  • Extended damage caused by excess soot and humidity
  • Mold growth

When technicians arrive within hours of the incident, they can more easily interrupt most of the ongoing damage.

Knowledge and Experience

It's important to hire people who know what they're doing. Look for specialists who are certified to mitigate commercial fire damage. Certification tells you that they have had the proper training and hands-on experience necessary to ensure complete remediation. You should take the time to ask each company you are considering about the extent of their experience. Incomplete fire damage restoration due to lack of expertise can result in a larger problem in the future.

Full Service Package

Many smoke cleanup companies will focus on either cleanup or rebuilding. When you hire a team that specializes in both, however, you may get a more seamless process. When cleaning and restoration are handled by the same team, you don't have to worry about whether the restoration technicians have all the information they need to do the job right. All the notes are included in the same file by the same company, and the whole team can access them. This can speed up the entire process, getting your business back on track in relatively little time.
When you need fire damage restoration, the company you hire to perform the service can make a big difference. Look for a company that has the expertise and professionalism needed to get the job done quickly.

How To Pump Water From a Flooded Basement

12/6/2019 (Permalink)

Sump pump in Pompano Beach, FL

How To Pump Water From a Flooded Basement

A major storm or broken pipe can cause a basement flood. With some basic equipment from a hardware or construction store, you should be able to drain the basement yourself.
You should not start the process until the exterior water has receded. In the meantime, keep any pets and children away from the flooded basement. You should also shut off the electricity in your home.
Be sure you have everything you need before entering the basement. The main tools you will use are:

  • Submersible pump
  • Hose
  • Nylon rope
  • Generator
  • Extension cord

Setting Up

Start by attaching the pump cord and the extension cord. Put the cords around a heavy object so they won't get wet. Next, attach a sump or garden hose to the top of the pump and tie the nylon rope. The hose should be placed so the excess water can drain into a nearby sewer.

Pumping

Use the nylon rope to lower the pump in place. Then turn on the generator and plug in the extension cord. The pump should then start draining the basement flood water. Once there are only a few inches of water left, put the pump in the lowest spot of the basement so it can suck up the remaining fluid.

Vacuuming

If the damage to your Pompano Beach, FL, basement is minimal, you may not even need to use a pump. Water that is less than one inch deep and confined to a small area can be drained using a wet/dry vacuum. This tool removes the water from the floor and puts it into a four-gallon tank that must be drained when it gets full.
Of course, the basement flood cleanup doesn’t end once the water has been removed. You also have to dry off and clean your belongings. Some wet items, such as carpet, may have to be discarded completely to reduce the risk of mold growth.
Emergency restoration professionals can help with the drying process. Your insurance coverage may even pay for the cost.

3 Tips for Keeping Your Furnace Running

11/22/2019 (Permalink)

If you maintain your furnace well, however, it should be reliable for the whole season

Heating System Maintenance

As the days grow shorter and the weather gets colder, you want to make sure your furnace is working well. Proper maintenance not only ensures that you won't be left with a chilly home when the first cold snap hits in Lighthouse Point, FL, but it also helps make certain your furnace won't become a fire hazard. You can likely avoid the need for fire cleaning if you keep up with heating system maintenance.

Cleaning

The most important aspect of furnace maintenance is keeping it clean. Focus on these three parts of the furnace to save yourself from requiring smoke cleaning services:

  • Motor
  • Blower
  • Filter

Fire cleaning specialists recommend that you change the filter before you turn the furnace on for the first time each year. When you remove the panel that covers the filter, you can gain access to the blower and the motor. The fan of the blower slides out so you can reach each blade. Use a toothbrush or some other tool for eliminating dirt and debris from small spaces. Clean each blade thoroughly to remove dust and residue. Wipe down the motor and all the surfaces. Finally, use the vacuum hose to remove loosened dirt.

Lubrication

If your motor is sealed, you don't have to provide extra lubrication. It is lubricated as part of the manufacturing process. To check on the type of motor, look for oil ports near the bearings. If you see ports, this means you have to lubricate it manually. You will need 10-weight motor oil, but you should only use a few drops. Lubricate your motor at least once a year, preferably right before the cold season starts. A well-oiled motor keeps your furnace running smoothly.
A burned-out furnace can cause a lot of damage that requires professional fire cleaning services. If you maintain your furnace well, however, it should be reliable for the whole season.

How Can First Responders Remain Safe Before, During and After a Flood?

Keep up to date with vaccinations

How Can First Responders Remain Safe Before, During and After a Flood?

When flooding causes devastation to your area in Coconut Creek, FL, your job as a first responder is to keep others safe. However, there are several precautions that emergency responders themselves should take to keep safe when responding to a flood.

1. Prepare for and Protect Yourself From Hazards

Wearing the appropriate clothing and using the right equipment when responding to a flood is often crucial. Boots, masks, gloves and other water-resistant clothes can reduce the chance of you coming in contact with contaminated water or mold spores. It's also often useful to be aware of common hazards during a flood, such as electrical hazards. Though some homeowners may be concerned about their belongings, emergency restoration services can assist in rebuilding homes, and it's often best to discourage others from attempting to salvage items in their homes.

2. Keep Up-To-Date with Vaccinations

As a first responder, there are various immunizations that can help protect you when you're in the midst of a flood response. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) requires emergency responders to have a Hepatitis B vaccination, as well as a tetanus booster once every 10 years. There are several additional vaccinations that may be helpful for emergency responders, though they are not required, such as a Hepatitis A vaccine and a typhoid vaccine.

3. Practice Effective Hygiene After a Flood

What you do after you respond to a flood is often just as important as what you do before and during your response. Effective hygiene after responding to a flood is a simple way to promote good health. After a flood, it's often helpful to wash your body with clean water and gentle soap. If any of your clothes have been contaminated, it's usually best not wear them again until they have been thoroughly sanitized and clean.

As a first responder, it's often necessary to keep yourself safe in order to help others. Preparing for hazards, keeping up-to-date with immunizations and practicing good hygiene after responding to a flood is often helpful.

Know the Basics of Your Commercial Storm Coverage

10/26/2019 (Permalink)

Structural damage in a Kendall, FL property

It may not be necessary to know everything about your commercial storm coverage, after all that's what your trusted insurance agent is for, but you should definitely know the basics. This puts you in a strong position to make informed decisions on your coverage. It also enables you to prioritize what fixes and preparations you should make to your building and its grounds in Kendall, FL. It's all about protecting the business from the effects of a powerful storm. As with all insurance policies, you don't want to be paying too much for storm insurance, nor do you want to have unnecessary gaps in your coverage.

Understand What Is Covered

It's critical to know what weather events your building is covered for. Many insurance coverage policies include the following situations:

  • Wind damage caused by a powerful storm
  • A business interruption caused by an "Act of God"
  • Water damage caused by a sudden event
  • Structural damage caused by lightning

Each policy is different, so make sure you have the storm insurance coverage your company needs. It's also critical to work to minimize the damage to your business by calling in storm mitigation professionals after a tornado or hurricane has passed through. A company that is Faster to any size disaster could help your business recover quickly from a storm.

Know What Is Not Covered

A business policy often includes several exclusions, specific events that are not covered under your policy. This could include damage from flooding, especially if your building is located in a flood zone. It may include some forms of water damage such as sewer backups. If you are found to be in neglect, such as failing to maintain your roof adequately, or if a problem has occurred over a period of time, this might be excluded as well. Your best defense is to know your policy and have frequent discussions with your insurance agent. This allows you to customize your insurance coverage to provide the best plan for the best price.

3 Actions to Take Immediately After a Home Fire

10/9/2019 (Permalink)

Replace important documents

After a fire in your home in Pompano Beach, FL, you may be overwhelmed by the incident and have no idea what to do afterwards. While you naturally need some time to process these events, it is important to act and forge the path to continuing your life. Consider the following actions to get the right resources, throw away damaged items and replace anything you will need soon.

Gather Essential Resources

Whether you lived in a small house alone or a larger building with a family, you will need as much help as possible. Prioritize the essentials, such as food, rest and shelter. Contact organizations such as the American Red Cross that can help you obtain these resources as you get back on your feet. Also contact your insurance company and provide them with details about the fire.

Get Rid of Vulnerable Items

As you work with the fire cleanup company to restore the residence to its former glory, you will need to make important decisions on what items to keep and which ones to throw away. There are certain items that are more vulnerable to contamination created by fire damage than others.

  • Damaged, burned clothing
  • All perishable and non-perishable foods
  • Medications
  • Toiletries and cosmetics

These items can be chemically altered by high heat or contaminated by ash, soot or smoke. Even if they are not significantly changed, their taste or performance may become undesirable.

Replace Important Documents

In addition to food, medicine and other items weak to the effects of the fire, your documents are also likely victims. There are particular documents you will need to replace immediately, including the driver's license, social security cards and credit cards, as well as more. Make the necessary calls and ensure new copies are on the way.
The aftermath of a fire will have you make important decisions, from what items to throw away to calling for assistance. Take your time, recover and tackle these situations as they manifest.

The Pros and Cons of Using a Mold Testing Kit

Mold testing in a Palm Aire, FL home

The Pros and Cons of Using a Mold Testing Kit

Moisture causes mold growth. Mold reproduces by releasing spores into the air. Those spores then attach themselves to surfaces and cracks — the cycle repeats. Mold is everywhere in Palm Aire, FL. There’s no getting around it. Using a mold testing kit allows you to check your home for mold. But is taking the DIY route worth it? Check out these pros and cons before you make your decision.

1. Expense

Pro - DIY mold kits can cost between $8 and $50. The package contains a petri dish and a swab. That’s it. Hiring a mold remediation specialist to test your home for mold can cause upward of $300.
Con - The expense with the kit starts to grow with the type and amount of testing you want. Although you buy a test from a store for $8, sending it off to a lab for further testing may cost you $50. Don’t get too excited about how cheap the price is.

2. Time

Pro – Directions for mold testing usually ask you to place a petri dish on a surface for an hour. Then you close it up and wait. Some tests take as little as 10 minutes to show results.
Con – If you want extra testing, you’ll have to send it off to a lab. Some kit results will come back in five days while others may take 10 days.

3. Explanation

Pro – If there is mold growth in the petri dish after the incubation period, you have mold. Simple as that. The lab can give you information on what type of mold you have in your home. You will receive an explanation in the mail.
Con – There is mold everywhere. No mold in a petri dish does not mean there is no mold in the house. A mold removal specialist will speak with you in person. This person will go into detail with you his or her concerns.
It is up to you to choose between a DIY mold kit and a mold specialist. But only an environment hygienist can do accurate mold testing. Is it worth spending the extra money to give you peace of mind?

How Storm Cleanup Differs From Other Mitigation

9/11/2019 (Permalink)

Flood damage in a Lighthouse Point, FL home

When a storm causes flooding in your home in Lighthouse Point, FL, you will need the assistance of water mitigation specialists. Floodwater from a storm differs from a pipe leak because not only do technicians have to remove the damaged materials from your home, they also have to make sure the affected area is disinfected.

Contamination Levels

There are three categories of floodwater:

Category 1 - Clean water from a source such as a pipe or supply line
Category 2 - Dirty water from a source such as a washing machine
Category 3 - Contaminated water from a source such as the sewer or storm

Water damage that results from a storm doesn't just put your homes structural integrity at risk. It also is likely to be contaminated with microbes and harmful bacteria. Therefore, the remediation process contains an extra step than basic water restoration does.

Basic Remediation

Any time there is flooding in your home, there are four things technicians have to do to return your home to its normal state. First, they remove the excess water. Then they tear out all the sodden materials and waterlogged items. They make sure the space is completely dry. Finally, they can rebuild any walls or flooring they had to remove and restore your home.

Storm Remediation

Because flood damage involves Category 3 water, your home must also be cleaned during mitigation. After most of the area is dry, the disinfection process begins. Using industrial cleaners or other methods, technicians clean the entire area. Then they test it for bacteria to make sure that it is clean. Only after the test confirms the contamination is gone can the rebuilding phase begin.
Flooding in your home after a storm isn't something you can just dry out and be done with. To fully mitigate the damage, a thorough cleaning must take place. Certified technicians have the skills and equipment needed to fully restore your home.

Filing a Claim From Leaky Pipes? Stop and Read This First

8/27/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage in Coconut Creek, FL

A sudden flood from broken or leaky pipes is no cakewalk. Water damage is the second most common type of home insurance claim, but it’s one of the most poorly understood in terms of covered losses. Your policy’s provisions and exclusions directly affect whether you’ll be reimbursed to fix a broken pipe and the resulting damage. Before you file your claim, it’s important to comprehend how insurers usually treat water damage and pipe problems.

What Type of Damage Is It?

Insurance policy language can vary widely. However, most insurers use a few different terms to discuss water damage

  • Initial damage
  • Gradual damage
  • Resulting damage

Initial damage is sudden and immediate, while gradual damage builds up over time. Resulting damage occurs to surrounding areas due to a broken pipe or appliance: soaked carpet and drywall if a pipe should flood, for instance. Just as insurers won’t pay normal wear and tear, they typically don’t pay for gradual damage.

Is My Water Damage a Covered Loss?

Insurance typically pays for damage from sudden or accidental causes. Should a pipe unexpectedly burst, insurance coverage would reimburse for damage to carpet, drywall, paint and other materials. Costs associated with drying out the home and preventing mold would also be included. These losses are handled by the dwelling coverage portion of your policy.

What About My Pipes?

Insurers consider pipes to fall under a homeowner’s maintenance responsibilities. You’re typically expected to repair or replace your pipes. The key is ensuring that you’re performing regular maintenance on your plumbing. If a slow or preventable leak causes a pipe to break, your claim may not be paid.

Broken or leaky pipes are a common homeowner problem, potentially leading to water damage. You need a trustworthy water damage restoration company in Coconut Creek, FL, to help you navigate the process. A quick response is critical when you’re dealing with a flood from pipes, so choose a provider that’s Faster to any size disaster.

3 Things You Should Know About Leaks and Mold

8/25/2019 (Permalink)

You should call a professional mold remediation company to come in and perform an inspection as well as any necessary cleanup and removal.

If you have a leak in the roof of your building in Pompano Beach, FL, then it won’t take long for water damage to start affecting the structure. In many cases, secondary damage such as black mold can cause even more trouble than the primary damage. The following are a few questions that you may want to know the answers to in order to keep your building in top shape.

1. How Does a Leak Contribute to Mold Growth?
This question has a simple and easy answer. Leaks create a wet area in the building which results in the optimal environment for mold to grow. This fungus thrives in moisture and can spread very quickly under the right circumstances. When you have a roof leak, it can result in a growth forming in the ceiling and may require quite a bit of work to remove it completely.

2. How Long Does It Take to Spread?
As mentioned, mold can spread quite quickly when provided with enough moisture. If you have a roof or ceiling leak, you could end up with a mold problem overnight. It takes as little as a day for this persistent fungus to start growing a colony and the longer it is left alone, the bigger the growth will become. Over time, it can spread to other areas of the building as well.

3. What Can You Do About It?
Luckily, you do not have to be at the mercy of this black mold. There are several steps you can take to prevent it from spreading, the first of which is to have repairs made as soon as you discover a leak or water damage. Keeping moisture levels low in the building by using a dehumidifier, vent or open windows can help as well.

If you find that you have black mold growing in your building, do not ignore the problem or expect it to go away on its own. You should call a professional mold remediation company to come in and perform an inspection as well as any necessary cleanup and removal.

Tips for Working Through Business Interruption

8/21/2019 (Permalink)

It only takes a few minutes for flooding to put you out of business.

Tips for Working Through Business Interruption
When flooding or other disasters affect your business properties to the point that you have to close up shop for a while, you're likely to face costs beyond the physical loss of and damage to your property. At this point, you may work with your insurance company to establish a period of business interruption. Along the way, you'll probably work with several different people:

Claims adjusters
Water damage cleanup and restoration technicians
Building inspectors
Insurance agents

While each of these professionals has a different role to play, they are all working with you toward the same end: getting your company back in business.

Cooperate With All Parties
Business interruption insurance is there to provide some compensation for the income you may lose during the time it takes to repair and restore your property following a broken pipe. While claims adjusters, inspectors, and other professionals are doing their work, there are a couple of things you can do to smooth the process and reduce the business interruption time.

Communicate Often
One of your top priorities should be to communicate fully and cooperatively with each one of the people working on your case. A positive relationship with insurance representatives and cleanup crews can go a long way toward keeping your work on track. Talk to agents, adjusters, and other representatives often, so they know the actions you're taking, and you know where they are in the claims process.

Organize Documentation
The second tip is to keep paperwork organized. You may have an estimated timetable for repairs, detailed business records, copies of the insurance policies, and written and photographic proof of damages. You'll also have copies of written communications; it's best to have all requests and agreements in writing to avoid misunderstandings. You may need to refer to or share this information often during the reconstruction process following large water damage, so keep it handy.

It only takes a few minutes for flooding to put you out of business. With help from a variety of professionals in Wellington, FL, you can survive the reconstruction process and get back to work as quickly as possible.

Steps for Filing a Water Claim

8/13/2019 (Permalink)

Bursting pipes in your home in Pompano Beach, FL, can cause a lot of damage. Fortunately, your homeowner's policy should help cover some if not all of the cost of mitigation in most circumstances. Here are the steps you can take to increase the chances that your claim will be accepted.

1. Determine Source of Damage
Before you make any calls, you need to know some answers to the questions your insurance company is likely to have. Find out where the water is coming from. Then turn off the water main and call a plumber to fix the broken pipe and water mitigation experts to start remediation so that you can avoid even more damage to your home.

2. Call Insurance Company
Quick notification of the issue to your insurance company accomplishes two things. First, it establishes a record of your vigilance in handling the situation. Second, it gives you the opportunity to ask important questions, such as:

Is the damage from the bursting pipes covered?
Does the claim exceed the deductible?
What is the deadline for submitting the claim?

3. Complete Forms on Time
Once you have your deadline for your claim, put it on your calendar. Even if your damage is covered under your policy, your claim can still be denied if you file too late.

4. Prepare for Adjuster's Visit
The insurance company will probably send out an adjuster to survey the damage to your home. Before he or she arrives, take pictures of the water damage and make an itemized list of everything that needs to be repaired or replaced. It may also be helpful to include the estimate from the remediation company.

If your home has damage as the result of burst pipes, your homeowner's policy will probably cover a lot of the cost of repairs. Make sure you don't forget any crucial steps so that your claim has a better chance of being accepted.

Does a Dry Climate Mean No Mold?

7/24/2019 (Permalink)

Keep indoor humidity below 45% to avoid the possibility of mold growth

Does a Dry Climate Mean No Mold?

You live in Wellington, FL, which has little to no rain and dry heat. So, although you think that means no black mold, you could be very wrong. It may be hot and dry outside, but may not be the case inside. Your overall goal is not having to deal with mold cleanup. Remember, mold grows in places with high moisture content such as humidity, leaky pipes and broken appliances.

High Humidity

Humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air, and when living in dry climates, it doesn’t play a big part. Inside the office building is a different matter. The air-conditioning unit can be set wrong or not working properly, giving the workspace a high humidity level. Set the level at 50% or lower. If your air- conditioning system does not have a dehumidifier built-in, you can purchase a commercial model.

Leaky Pipes

Water leakage from rusted or broken pipes is a significant concern and one you may not be aware of. The water can be in the walls or under the floor, which means mold has a perfect spot to populate. Drywall is a common area found to develop black mold. Drinking fountains placed near carpeted areas create a recipe for disaster. Water from a broken pipe can flow directly onto the carpet, and although most of the water can be wiped up, the leftover still sitting in the corner can start to produce mold.

Broken Appliances

Like leaky pipes, hoses which connect to a water supply are also susceptible. Not correctly attaching hoses on appliances such as commercial dishwashers, washing machines and your HVAC system could create unneeded headaches and a lot of moisture. An HVAC system with mold growth can quickly spread spores through the air ducts.
Dry climates aren’t usually susceptible to mold, but it doesn’t take much moisture for spores to grow. Consistently maintain and repair pipes and appliances and be aware of the humidity level in the office. A mold remediation specialist can point out the parts of your building black mold targets.

How to Repair Roof Damage

7/9/2019 (Permalink)

Rood damage due to severe storm in Palm Aire, FL

Steps to Restore Your Roof

If you have experienced a severe storm in Palm Aire, FL, it is possible that your home has suffered some wind damage. Strong winds, rain and hail can all cause damage to your house, particularly to roofing. If this has happened, use the following steps to restore the area.

1. Prevent Further Damage

The first step of roof repair is to prevent any additional damage until you are able to begin work. This will help keep repairs to a minimum and can be done by covering the area in a tarp or plastic cover.

2. Remove Unsalvageable Materials

If the roof damage is extensive, there may be parts that cannot be repaired. These materials should be removed before restoration can begin.

3. Allow the Area to Dry

If it is not removed, moisture can cause even more problems for your roof. Not only can water cause the materials to warp or rot, but it can also contribute to the growth of mold. This fungus can spread quickly to other areas of your home as well.

4. Clean and Sanitize

In order to remove mold spores that could spread, as well as other contaminants, the area should be thoroughly cleaned before you begin any roof repair. Any debris from the storm should be removed as well.

5. Perform Necessary Repairs

Once these steps have been completed, you can begin work to repair the roof. In some cases, you may need to rebuild certain areas. If the damage was minor, you might only need to replace a few shingles.

It is important that the work on your roof is done correctly to prevent any future damage, so if you are not comfortable doing this on your own, you can hire an emergency restoration company to perform the roof repair for you. With their knowledge and expertise, you can feel confident that the work is done properly.

How To Know When Mold Growth Is Covered by Homeowners Insurance

6/12/2019 (Permalink)

Contact your insurance agent to verify mold growth policy coverage.

It can be tricky to determine whether the mold is covered by your homeowner's insurance policy. If you have discovered fungus growth in your home, it is unlikely to be covered by your insurance, unless it was caused by something that your policy already covers.

When Is Mold Covered by Insurance?

Many insurance companies do not offer mold coverage in their homeowner's policies. However, there are certain cases in which your policy may include mold-related repairs. Essentially, if mold forms as the result of sudden or accidental water damage, it is likely to be included in your policy. Specifically, you may qualify if it is determined that mold was caused by one of the following incidents:

• Frozen or burst pipes
• Broken appliances
• Backed-up water from snow or ice

When Is Mold Not Covered by Insurance?

In most cases, fungus growth will not be included in your insurance policy. If mold forms as a result of negligence or your failure to properly take care of your home, it will not be covered. You should be sure to monitor any areas that are in frequent contact with water in order to prevent mold growth. Mold caused by a flood will likely not be included in your policy, so you will need separate flood insurance to cover the damage.

What Are the Exceptions?

Like with most things, there are exceptions to the rule. You may be able to include mold insurance in your policy for an additional price. Some insurance policies might include limited coverage for mold growth. You likely won’t receive the full amount needed to repair the damage, but even a little money can help.

If you discover mold or fungus growth in your home in Pompano Beach, FL, determining the cause can help you figure out whether it will be covered by your insurance. Hiring a mold remediation specialist or insurance adjuster can be useful, as well.

Common Water Damages Covered Under Commercial Policies

4/19/2019 (Permalink)

Damaged pipes are not always covered under commercial insurance policies, but certain situations are.

Most business owners understand that water damage that occurred as a result of neglect will not be covered under their business policies. Therefore, if damaged pipes have been left unchecked and without inspection for years, then any subsequent damage will likely not be covered. However, if the disaster is sudden, then a policy may cover it, especially under specific instances.

1. Sudden Breaks

While leaking pipes may not be covered, sudden breaks most likely are. These breaks happen despite the business owner performing routine inspections and maintenance. These failures are considered not foreseeable, meaning that despite the preventative and proactive steps taken by the property owner, the disaster happened anyway. This type of accident is likely covered under your policy.

2. Fire Suppressant System Leaks

While insurers do not always cover damaged pipes, fire suppressant system leaks often are. The life-saving nature of these systems is likely why insurers are willing to provide coverage, especially since these devices help to protect the facility from a further loss in the event of a fire.

3. Damage to Protective Systems

In addition to leaks, your insurer will likely cover damage to protective systems as well. This means that if the sprinkler heads are damaged or the pipes corroded, your insurer will probably cover the costs associated with the repair. By including these minor expenses, insurers can prevent further loss through system malfunctions and flooding.

4. Tear Out and Repair

The insurance company will often cover the cost of tear out and repair. Due to the design of plumbing systems, most pipes are located behind walls and inside ceilings. Therefore, while your policy may not cover a leaky pipe, it may cover the cost of hiring a disaster restoration specialist in the Pompano Beach, FL area to tear out the wall and repair it.

Damaged pipes are not always covered under commercial insurance policies, but certain situations are. Sudden breaks and damaged fire sprinklers are likely covered under every commercial plan, and while leaks may not be, the tear out and repair work probably is.

Commercial Water Damage In Your Pompano Beach Pet Supply Store

4/10/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage such as plumbing leaks, floods, sewage backup, storms, and appliance malfunctions all cause sudden loss to your pet supplies store. Getting it cleaned up and back to its normal state is your priority, as should be the same for any water damage remediation company you hire. At SERVPRO, we lower interruptions to your business operations and do all that is possible so you can stay open during the process of restoration so you can keep providing for your family and employees, and of course our furry friends.

Equipment Spotlight: Dehumidifier

4/9/2019 (Permalink)

Dehumidifiers have an important role in the water damage restoration process. They are used to make the drying process a lot quicker. Once air movers have evaporated hidden moisture into the air, dehumidifiers then eliminate that moisture. Many of the dehumidifiers that SERVPRO uses come with sensors that monitor performance for automatic variable fan speed adjustments.

Dehumidifiers work like sponges by pulling in moist, humid air and discharging dry, warm air. Most dehumidifiers work similarly to how air conditioners regulate humidity. They pre-cool air that's coming in before it passes over cold evaporator coil. Then, the cold coil condenses water vapor into water that collects into a pump that is removed by an automatic pump-out system.

After a short time of these machines working together, your home or business will be free of moisture and the threat of dangerous mold. At SERVPRO, we are also sure to keep each job free of contamination by changing the filter after each job if mold or other sign of contamination was possible.

The SERVPRO drying process is just another way that we help make it "Like it never even happened."

Safely Enjoying a Bonfire

4/5/2019 (Permalink)

There are precautions you and loved ones can take when gathering around a bonfire.

The first precaution to take is to pick out or build a sturdy fire pit. To ensure you're going to stay safe as well as keep your home safe, pick a fire pit at least 10 feet away from any structure. You're going to want to make sure you also have enough space to comfortably sit and provide proper ventilation for the fire pit.

A second precaution is to check your local weather. Windy conditions are not good conditions for a bonfire. A sturdy and strong breeze could easily blows embers or sparks unto people or combustible items.

A third precaution is to have fire extinguishing equipment nearby and ready in case of a fire emergency. A water hose, extinguisher, or sand are great to have in an emergency.

One last precaution is to wear the right kind of clothing. Wearing non flammable clothing and hard-sole shoes are the best choices to wear. Skip going barefoot to a bonfire, it may sound cozy but it leaves you at a huge risk for some serious burns.

But when parents must get some work done in the midst of the fun, what can you do?

SERVPRO® of Pompano Beach has put together some creative ways to help our kids pass the time at work.

Kids Day Kit

A good “workday” kit includes some of the following items:

  • Crayons or markers
  • Construction Paper
  • Glue
  • Blunt Scissors (for older kids)
  • Coloring Books
  • Play-Doh®
  • And if all else fails…an iPad LOL

Large Cardboard Box

Here at SERVPRO® of Pompano Beach, when you add a cardboard box to a group of kids, imaginations soar! The cardboard boxes are customarily used for customer pack outs, but for a kid, it allows them to create all sorts of things. There are so many things you can create with a large cardboard box. A house, a fort, a castle or a boat are just a few different ideas that can take up lots of time. Make sure that any cutting out of windows or doors is done by an adult, though.

Snacks

Nothing helps ease some boredom better than snack time. Crackers, chips and juice give the kids just the pick-me-up they need after that hard day of working with mom or dad. It helps boost morale when the troops are getting restless.

Take a Break

Sometimes you may even want to get in on the action and take a break from the humdrum of work. Color a picture or watch a show on your iPad with your child. Because time goes by so quickly, spending this type of quality time with your child is essential for their overall mental health and well-being.

Enjoy Yourself

These moments don’t come by often so take this time to just enjoy the company of your child. Let them see some of the things you do at work so that even conversations at home become more relatable when you talk about how your day was. Kids love being with their parents and it’s moments like this that you will grow to treasure as they grow older.

Wellington is known for its equestrian events

SERVPRO® of Pompano Beach is so excited to announce that we have been granted the ability to service Wellington in Palm Beach County; one of the great communities here in South Florida!!

Wellington

The Village of Wellington is a beautiful area located just west of West Palm Beach and Lake Worth. It is known for its equestrian community and hosts the Winter Equestrian Festival, the longest running horse show in the world. It is also home to the International Polo Club Palm Beach and the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center.

Money Magazine listed Wellington as one of the top 100 places to live. There were fewer than 100 residents in Wellington at its inception in 1953, but now it has grown to over 61,000 residents. It features beautiful areas dedicated to urban living and exquisite natural areas for outdoor activities.

Wellington houses 11 Palm Beach County A-rated schools (some of which offer magnet programs) and maintains its safety and services for its residents by working with the Sheriff’s Office of Palm Beach County and its Fire Rescue.

Areas of Interest

Village Hall

This “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design” (LEED) Gold Certified building allows residents to pay their water bills, apply for a permit, attend a council meeting or speak with a Village representative. It really is a one-stop shop that provides a model for sustainable infrastructure in Wellington.

Patriot Memorial

This beautiful memorial was designed to honor those who lost their lives in the tragic events that occurred at the World Trade Center In New York, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and on Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. It serves as a place of remembrance and reflection for its visitors.

Amphitheater & Scott’s Place

The Wellington Amphitheater includes a state-of-the-art lighting and sound system located next to Scott’s Place’s Barrier-Free playground. It is available for concerts, movie nights, school functions and plays. Scott’s Place is a perfect playground for children with or without disabilities. It contains slides, wheelchair ramps, swings and other attractions.

Community Center

Located on Forest Hill Boulevard, the 2-story, 26,000 sq. ft. facility overlooks the beautiful Lake Wellington. It gives the residents the ability to hold events and serves as a hub for the village.

Big Blue Forest Preserve

This undeveloped 92-acre tract of land containing wetlands and many old-growth cypress trees is lovingly called the Big Blue Forest Preserve. It got its name from “Bink” Glisson after the blue haze that rises from the top of the gigantic cypress trees. Some of the cypress trees are said to be over 300 years old.

A Little History About SERVPRO®

As a corporation, SERVPRO® started from humble beginnings in 1967 and has grown to over 1,700 franchises becoming one of the most nationally recognized restoration companies in the business.

One of the attributes that SERVPRO® promotes both nationally as well as in each local franchise is a sense of community and an outreach mentality that naturally help support the cities we’re located in.  So much so that in 1991, we were awarded the Nashville Business Journal’s Small Business of the Year.

Notable Job Role: Production Crew Chief

11/9/2017 (Permalink)

Production Crew Chief

Disaster strikes, and one of the first point of contacts is the Production Crew Chief. He or she is the one who will monitor, communicate, and respond to a customer needs. Being both a good listener and having great people skills is what makes a Production Crew Chief a vital part of the SERVPRO production team. During a time of cleanup and in some cases, reconstruction, the constant communication is necessary to make sure those customer needs are fully met. By resolving issues and concerns, the customer is satisfied throughout the entire process. How do you know if you have a good Production Crew Chief? He or she will be sure to follow the unique and time efficient SERVPRO 1-4-8 job response. The "1" of the 1-4-8 job response is to contact the insured within one hour of the loss. This first step is done in order to have services quickly arranged and prevent further loss. The "4" of the 1-4-8 job response is when a SERVPRO Production Crew Chief is at the job site within 4 hours of the loss ready to begin mitigation services if needed. The step "8" is when a Production Crew Chief gets in contact with the insurance adjuster 8 hours after the loss to discuss what the job will consist of and steps on moving forward. With SERVPRO of Pompano Beach, our Production Crew Chief will make sure the customer is always informed and the job is closely monitored to be completed as quickly as possible.
